  • As long as the damn thing is still in the Great Lakes, it's not called a freighter. It's a tanker. Could be a laker, could be a saltie, but always a tanker. Sorry, but the people in Ohio who wrote this article must be transplants to the Great Lakes region. They should know better. My favorite idiom of this geographic area, which has won me many a trivia contest, is that all ships on the Great Lakes are called tankers. We don't care if they're carrying liquid, gas, iron ore, or shipping containers: we call them tankers. It's an idiom, and it's slowly dying, but I love it so I refuse to let go. Officially, tankers are either lakers or salties (lakers never leave the Great Lakes, salties are visiting ocean freighters). Lakers are very versatile ships which can carry almost any kind of bulk product: a ship might carry iron ore out of Minnesota this year and petroleum products in liquid form next year. Maybe that's how everybody got in the habit of calling them all tankers, because you never knew what might be in them. Lakers, no matter how large they get, can operate in confined areas that your normal ocean freighter wouldn't dare enter. I was in my sailboat in a channel once, in the middle of the night, coming in from a night sail on Lake Michigan, clinging to the concrete seawall, praying to God that the doggone tanker going the other way had enough clearance to avoid smashing me into particles. (You know what the Coast Guard watch commander said after the tanker went by? I mean, after he called me an idiot? He said he was trying to tell me to wait until the tanker went by but apparently I wasn't listening to my radio. Oops.) And they operate without tug boats. They just drive in and out, sometimes with less than ten feet of clearance on either side.

As for the tanker stuck in the ice: no big deal. The crew can always hop off the boat and walk to shore.

  • Whatever kind of ice it is I am sure it's the wrong kind of ice and all of this is caused by global warming. Algore did predict all this stuff in his movie, right?

  • Democrats and other mindless leftists: Close your eyes, click your heels three times, and say, "Global warming is real, global warming is real"
