All in all this guy needs to be fired. It is that simple. He discriminated against her and essentially pushed her out of a position when she was not ready. He could have just seen it as jewelry as many people who aren't Christians use the cross. He must have known that she is a practicing Catholic and targeted her.
This supervisor should have to do a course on diversity and sensitivity training toward Christians and Catholics in particular. If it is good one way, it is good the other way.
