The store will “…give away a free pair of black leather Nikes to every student who comes to class on Oct. 3, the day when students are counted and their numbers used as the basis for per-pupil funding from the state and federal government.” But the culture is not dysfunctional or anything.

Women generally wouldn't be at war. Because they would not "dick wave" (my apologies for the term)at their enemies. Look - suppose that the wholesale price of these shoes is $25 per pair (the story says "leather" shoes - not cheap on a good day) , and lets go with the 14,000 pairs. That is $350,000. If you go to the other end - 17,000 pairs at $30 per pair, you are over half a million.
How could a mom-and-pop shoe store in the ghetto possibly be earning enough to GIVE AWAY that kind of money? The quickie research I did says that there are (at least) three owners, so they would have to be making profits over 2-3 million annually to pay reasonable salaries to the owners and afford charity of that magnitude.
Even if they are just looking for a tax write-off the numbers don't work out sensibly. If it was for that, we would be talking retail - $980,000 - $1.5million using the 14,000/17,000 and $70/$90 values. How much would this store have to earn to use THOSE tax advantages?
PLUS - why would it be a one-day thing if the owners really were being completely altruistic? Wouldn't you expect, if the owners were trying to encourage poor kids to do well in school, they would offer free sneakers to kids who got at least a C or better on their report card, or something? No - it's not just because they are nice guys. Someone or some entity is behind this, and it clearly must be because it is "count the kids" day.

Well, Karmaa, you see that is the whole point.They are NOT trying to get kids to stay in school and do well. They are bribing the student to show up n this particular day to increase their chances of incresing funding. In Texas, a "snapshot" of the school day is collected at 9AM. Those with behinds in chairs at that time are present and accounted for. But if your kid had a dentis appointment, or the car acted u and they didn't get there til 9:01AM, according to the state, they were not there. No child is TRULY suspended. The still come to school and stay in "in school suspension (iss)for a given number of days. Really rowdy kids who would likely have been expelled when I was in school., are now kept in a different facility, called "alternate school" for a minimum of 6 week grading period, or more, d0ependanton their behavior at alternate school. Anything to keep the money flowing, because the Legislature keeps saying we need to improve our educational outcomes, but keeps cutting funding. And our teachers are not unionized, so its not just them.
I know. My point was that this group is obviously getting something out of this, and it's not for the sake of educating kids. Altruism would suggest that they want the kids to succeed (ie: STAY in school). What they are doing suggests that they only want more cash for the schools (have the kids be in school to be counted, then go scatter like roaches the second the counting is done).
So, why would a SHOE STORE want more cash for schools? Who exactly is going to make up the cost of these free shoes? I have no doubt that the payola will be coming, through some shifty channels, from the DFT (great acronym, huh? Detroit Federation of Teachers = DaFT). They HAVE to keep the rolls up to keep the teachers employed, and to keep the cash rolling in to the union. It's a dirty, nasty circle.
What gets me is that this is not "rocket surgery" (to quote my daughter). Can there really be people who cant do the simple math, and see the glaring focus, and put 2 and 2 together? Or is this just another example of how the libs don't even CARE what it looks like anymore?
Or to look at it the other way 'round - - just to BREAK EVEN on the giveaway they would have to sell about 50 pairs a day every day for a year.

We're supposed to believe that one store is going to give away 14,000 to 17,000 pairs of Nikes? I'd bet the taxpayers are picking up the tab. But it's all bullshit, the students just have to show up on October 3rd to be counted for per-pupil state and federal funding; they can stay home the rest of the school year while the school administrators and and teachers reap the financial benefits.
If the Detroit schools were really interested in increasing student attendence, they'd give the Nikes to them at the end of the school year as a reward for good attendence and academic achievement. But the Detroit politicians and teachers have long since given up on the kids. And, to be honest, the kids aren't interested in getting a education. Who needs an education when the feds and the state will subsidize your idleness.
Shot the only thing I was ever promised was the opprotunity to possible learn. It all depended on how much effort I put forth. I do know what was promised if I didn't show up. A good old fashion ass busting, twice. Once at school and one when I got home.

If truant students' families receive government aid, report it to their social worker and cut their aid. Problem solved. Worked for me when I told truant high school students in the 80s what I would do if they attend class.
That won't work any more. Social workers are in on the scam.
Who is funding this? And, no - I do not believe that the store is doing it out of generosity.
