DNC Video: “The Government Is The Only Thing We All Belong To”: In total opposition to the notion of an “ownership society” the DNC introduces the “we own you society”. Or should we say re-introduces, it would seem that we’ve seen this sort of thinking somewhere before.

  • Great discussion all. With the earlier Julia video and this one the democrat party message is clear - they want the government to control all and take care of all. Hard to see how this vision differs from communism.

      How DARE they say that WE belong to them? The dems are willing to give THEM the upper hand, to be our masters. In fact, we are (supposed to be) the masters of our government.

      Sorry to yell, but this really makes me mad. Not just that they SAID it, but that they said it so casually - like "oh yeah, they'll understand it if we put it like THIS". This was not a casual slip in a live speech or an interview. This was deliberately crafted and scripted to be on a piece that many people would see, so it can't be walked back so easily, either.

  • But yeah, it's uncanny how they can get stuff so exactly WRONG. Government belongs to us. Let me expand a bit, just put this up on Twitchy--

    Amazing how they manage to get so many things exactly WRONG. Government belongs to us, "We the People." Government is NOT the source of rights, it is the protector of our inherent rights (or is meant to be.)

    Even if that isn't what they meant to say --and I'll be fair, I think maybe it isn't, I think maybe all they WERE trying to say was a sort of "we the people" thing -- even if that IS all they were trying to say -- THEY COULDN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE! Now THAT'S what I find scary!

    • the statement is immediately followed by a reference to Churches and Clubs.. If one says "we all belong to this Church", does that mean we are owned by the Church? Or that we all share membership in the Church?

      If one speaks of having a sense of belonging, is that a happy I-Am-OWNED sentiment?

      The meaning is pretty clear to me.. Don't need to resort to Nazis and Fascists to clear it up.. or muck it up.

      • Yeah, that's kinda what I was driving at, that may have been what they were trying to say, but when is the last time you heard someone use THAT phrase in THIS context? When have you EVER heard, for example, a mailman say he BELONGS to the government in the same way that he BELONGS to a postal workers union? Or anyone say that they "belonged" to the government who was not an actual government official -- a Secretary of State or Treasury Director might say they belong to the government, but from anyone else it's just a poor construction and usage.

        And, as I note, I think it's that THEY can't tell the difference is what the problem is, even if they meant it as you suggest; in any event it is the government which belongs to We The People.

        • Most military refer to themselves as owned by the government via the brack f service they are in. Once you are in, you basically HAVE not rights! THey can work you as long and for as many hours as they choose. THey can force you to move your home and family anywhere there is a base and you have to go. An active duty member cannot sue the government FOR ANYTHING. So in that context, they are owned. Me? Don't NOBODY own me!

      • The analog to the church or club in their video fails in that that those organizations are ones of free associations. So despite their inclusion of them in this exercise of theirs the difference is so fundamental that I was unable to categorize them as like entities. Membership in organizations of free association can be dissolved at will and generally without consequences depriving one of life, liberty or property. It is not possible to opt out of the sort of government being planned and espoused by this convention without losing at least two of the three. This goes well beyond the Locke and Hobbes system of social contract. One is not (as has not been entered into) an agreement to cede certain God given rights in order to have greater God given rights protected from those that would encroach upon them. (and I don't mean to offend your sensibilities concerning God, it is just that without an authority higher than government to pass out these rights we've no real moral authority of our own to reject the subversion of these rights when that is the business attended to by either the minority or the majority) We are now regarding politicians (many Republicans just as bad) that have assumed the state can compel action right down to insuring our bodies as if they were the property of the government. We have Supreme Court Justices who will not commit to the notion that the Federal Government cannot force a person to "eat their vegetables". We've persons of public prominence forwarding the philosophy that rights are granted by the state. But if we assume that rights are imparted by will of the state, then we’ve permitted that state authority to ablate them. And ablate them it will.

        Even in that Jefferson Statement that "the Earth belongs to the living" was made in his belief that social contract could not be rightly thrust upon the next generation. That debts could not be justly thrust upon the next generation. That we must all be free to choose our associations up to and including government. Now I must ask . . . do you really believe that this is the sort of government the DNC is seeking? One that is established merely to protect the rights of the people. One that is disinterested in any authority that goes beyond protecting the rights of the individual and being arbiter in certain specific contract disputes. One that will not force us to buy health insurance. One that will not force us to pay for abortions. One that will not regulate power away from the consumer and rig the economic system to the benefit of the corporatists. And if that is truly the sort of club the DNC video is referencing . . . then I will gladly concede the point.

        I apologize if I have come off snarky or smug. These are character flaws of mine. I value your opinion . . . probably more so when we disagree than when we agree. It makes me think. And that is a good habit to be in.

        • Nah.. great response Kip :) I even read Jefferson's letter, and was writing some response but it deserves some sleep.. I come here to get some thinking done too, and clear out the bullshitty cobwebs that gum up the mindworks.. i'll have to take a little break tomorrow to finish

      • Normally one chooses to belong to an organization. The government was designed to serve us....We the people ARE supposed to be government. The US government was not intended to be a collective. Sorry, but this is straight out of the Wilsonian and FDR playbooks where crises were hyped up to create the unified and supreme state apparatus.

        • You make a fair point, regarding organizational choice. But in doing so, it seems you depart from the original posts charge that they claim ownership over all. Personally, i'd have advised they use "country" instead of government, but clearly they want to defend a highly loaded word.

          Usually when I hear a die-hard conservative rail against government, I slip in "bad government", "wasteful government", "welfare/nanny state"... And i'm on board. But I'd never oppose its existence. At present, government is a necessary organization. Without it, Anarchy would only breed a new scarier form of it

          • "We all belong to the Church" sounds pretty creepy to me. Of course, I can't think of a Church in this country that has people with guns on the payroll that come to your home to take you away to jail if you happen to use the wrong wood in your guitar business.

          • I'm not anti-government per se but no one should feel "belonged" by it. I am vehemently anti-big government and am wary of any effort that suggests collectivism.

          • I hear ya.. you are not an anarchist. But anti-government rhetoric is so strong in parts of Republican party that many are left wondering.. and feel they must defend the very concept. I think its rhetoric of poor quality.. e.g. railing specifically against a cancerous welfare state (instead of "government") would be a lot more effective

            I'm surprised more of them didn't attempt clarification.. It sounds to me like they are answering on basis of membership.. (i realize we've narrowed down the problem to compulsory membership, but still, a tad less onerous then being PWND)

  • I think they meant the government is the only thing the DNC plantation workers belong to. I don't belong to anything motherfuckers-and to infer that I belong to you is sick stuff-and you should be ashamed DNC-you should all go shoot yourselves!       • Thanks :) I understand Matthew's anger and I sympathize, but you are absolutely right. We can mock, be horrified and incredulous, and even wish bad things on others but wishing people shot is crossing the line. Plus it might bring out the anti-gun cockroaches.

The revolution is the only thing we all belong to? (according to Dead Che) You could apply this bizarre statement to any one of the worlds former and current dictators, or cult movements...Maybe the liberals want to take over for Reverend Moon now that he assumed room temperature..... This is just the slogan for liberals to do that.. I thought we all belonged to the human race, but apparently the democrats are now in charge of that too. I don't BELONG to the government, I just want it to climb off my back and stay the hell out of my healthcare, grocery store, car, and any place else these libturds have wanted ti "inject" themselves lately.
