Homer (my basset hound) pointed out to me that only 17% of the doctors are AMA members and that this says only 13% agree with their organization (the AMA), so this is a much smaller number than it might seem to indicate. Homer is very good at math. It looks like the AMA is positioned to lose 87% of its membership if the rift continues.
If I recall, the AMA and the doctors were in conflict over the creation of Medicare in the mid-60s. Most physicians are small businessmen and women and see the issues framed in a real-world context. I don't know the AMA that well, but if they're anything like some other large well-known "lobbying" groups, they're basically a bunch of elitists who think their clients are stupid idiots.
