Driverless bus crashes on its first day

Driverless bus crashes on its first day. We wonder what the odds in Vegas were on this?

  • I was confused by the article but I think the pic above shows what really happened and the problem with auto-drive cars. The truck was backing up and the shuttle pulled up and stopped. Technically the shuttle had the right of way, but in the real world a human driver would have seen that the truck was backing up and the shuttle would have stopped short of where the truck was going to be going. This is the kind of thing that happens all the time that people do instinctively- and it is what makes the roads actually work. Auto-drivers are rules based and can't handle the odd things that happen all the time that are critical to making roads work efficiently.

  • You should really read the article. The semi backed into the driverless bus. The semi driver was cited for hitting the bus. The bus was 100% not at fault.

Which is typical of self driving vehicles. They are WAY more likely to be involved in collisions, but they are WAY less like to be at fault.

    • I see no need to change my comment below. Surely it should have been able to see the tractor trailer backing up and moved out of the way like a human driver would have. If not, the programmers suck.

  • What, it couldn't see that giant tractor trailer in front of it? Seriously? If it couldn't see something that big, what chance does a pedestrian have?

    • That's bad for the gambling biz. They'll end up spending all their money on the hospital or funeral parlor.

      • How long before we have our first driverless bus that converts to Islam and mows down pedestrians on the Strip while honking out "Alahu Akbar!" in Morse code?

  • The Progressive solution to this problem will be to require all driverless cars to have two pilots.
