Entire Missouri City Police Department Resigns over Lack of Proper Tools, Low Wages

Entire Missouri City Police Department Resigns over Lack of Proper Tools, Low Wages. Things were so bad they couldn’t even hire dudes with mullets.

The entire police department of Kimberling City, Missouri, has resigned following a resignation letter from the department’s chief.

Former Chief Craig Alexander informed town officials that “he felt he was no longer able to complete his job at his very best,” according to KOLR 10. A lack of proper tools, low wages, better opportunities, and a lack of administrative help constitute the reasons officers are leaving.

  • Listen, this is a non-story. A lot of small communities go back and forth on whether to have their own police departments. There is an enormous fixed minimum cost to having your own police department. Based on what I see in this case, this town was way too small to have its own police department. They will save tons of money contracting with the county sheriff. All that fixed cost will disappear and all they will have is the annual fee to the sheriff.

A long time ago I studied this issue for a township where I was the accountant, and they wondered about starting their own police department. I found a similar sized township that already had their own police department. Where my township was paying $200,000 per year to the sheriff on a deal that promised us two cars assigned to our township at all times, the other township of similar size was paying $3.5 million per year and many times during the week had only one patrol car on duty. The decision to stay with the sheriff was a no-brainer.
