I work vicariously for the Union Pacific rail road and the region I drive for is primarily coal track. Recently, they lost 23 large coal contracts and in the blink of an eye our over the road traffic fell off a good forty five per cent. The local regional terminal manager laid off more than 85 engineers and over 100 conductors. We dropped one yard van and were tailored back to three days a week! Yay team Obama! The EPA has taken a disliking to coal production and transportation and all under the supervision and with the consent of the current administration.
My son in law works at a coal fired plant in OK. The word at the plant is that Buffett is making rolling stock "unavailable" to ship more than a fraction of the coal they need. This has been the case for some time. The plant is slowly being choked to death despite not being out of step with current EPA specs and investing many millions on scrubbers.
IF the GOP actually decides to do something it should outlaw shutting down the coal plants until NG plants can be built, then give them the same subsidies now given to the bird grinders and bird roasters.

Dave, I'm not a union guy, never have been. I'm just trying to show folks here what some of the 'unforeseen' consequences of voting for Dommunists are. Every union member needs to bear in mind that their money and their votes Hell cause this, so that when they get good and mad at what's happening to their city, county, state, or nation, they can look in the mirror and finish the guilty party. Elections have consequences.

If people had paid more attention to this idiot's agenda when he first started campaigning rather than jumping on the hopey-changey bandwagon in '08 when the media basically coated him in Teflon, we wouldn't be in this position. He's doing basically what he said he would do all along, capped by his promise to fundamentally change this country. I just got my electric bill Saturday. I HAD been paying a budget amount of $96/mo. The new bill was for $119. And my consumption for July was DOWN by about 20% from June. I thought it was a mistake until I look at the charges for transmission and production. All had increased by nearly 50%.
I live in the Pittsburgh area, and the air quality is STELLAR. Especially compared to what it was in the 50's and earlier. Partly due to the loss of steel making and general manufacturing, but also from EPA measures in the 70's...which I agreed with at the time, btw. But just like everything ELSE the gov't does, it's never good ENOUGH. They always want MORE.
We've always had coal-fired power plants, and with the scrubbers they installed, about all that comes out of the stacks is steam. But a lot of them were switched out to gas, which is even cleaner...AND cheap, with the advent of fracking. But now, the mandate is for "not ready for prime time" solar and wind...REGARDLESS of the cost.
And who picks up the tab? The little guy that's trying to figure out how to pay for groceries out of his SS check. But they're ALL for the little guy...just ask them. Republican AND Democrat. They ALL can rot in Hell...
That's another thing...when electric rates go up, EVERYTHING goes up. It affects the cost pf production for everything...and just like shit rolls down hill, the end costs are picked up by the consumer...as if they weren't strapped enough as it is.
Speaking of misery in the winter, the UK tried this shit a few years ago, and killed off 10,000 "pensioners" that either couldn't afford to keep the heat on, or didn't GET any heat because of the constant power outages. But what the hell, we couldn't learn from Neville Chamberlain's mistakes, why would we learn anything from something as mundane as electricity production?
And "shakedown" is PRECISELY what it is. It's all part of the UN wet dream of redistributing the wealth from countries that HAVE it to Third World shitholes where people are burning dung for heating and cooking...and dying from the fumes. If this bathhouse slug had ANY sense or compassion, we'd be shipping King Coal to those countries so they would HAVE a reliable source of energy. But no...let's just ship off a gazillion dollars to some tribal schmucks and let THEM give it away. I'm SURE they'll do the right thing...
All this extra tax does nothing but subsidize democrat and RINO workers at the EPA. As you say, the air is clean as it needs to be. All else, including the latest from President Climate Change is just a government shakedown of the public for money.
And, therein lies the problem. With gas being so cheap, Barky is having trouble making the price of energy skyrocket, so he's trying to kill off all the plants that aren't ready to convert to gas yet. I guess he didn't cause enough misery last winter, so he's going to try to cause brownouts in the North this winter.
