Another, more honest way, would be: Some time ago a man in his late thirties adopted a man in his late twenties so that they could defraud the government. And now after, nearly a half century of, eating their cake they want a wedding one too.

Actually they went through the adoption process to get benefits from the government, so in truth they defrauded the government. It is not hard to do whatever you need to do in order to make sure that a live-in partner (of any kind not have to be sexual), and you are protected or have what is needed "in case something happens". Also the government is at fault by not accepting power of attorney in some cases, that is wrong the government should allow for the use of POA for all transactions, so the government is at fault for the fraud at some level. The Government is at fault for a lot of things, another thing that they are at fault is excessive taxation that in many ways led to the issues we have right now. In any case, they did this to defraud the government and wasted all that time and money doing all of that instead of doing wills, insurance, POA and other documents to ensure that their assets and their lives will be connected in case something happens.

The gay couple had one adopt the other so that they could be the next of kin in case something happens. This was back when gay marriage was not legal where they lived.
Now that gay marriage is legal nationwide they are trying to reverse this adoption.
