It has redpeatedly been shown that healthier meals will be eaten if properly cooked and presented, and stay within budget. The government also forces the use of whatever surplus they choose to make available, whether it meets the menu plan or not. One of the shows I saw, the professional made a stir fry dish with meat, multiple veggies and pasta. The kids were inhaling it as quick as they could stuff it in their moths, but the school district dispositive SId the meal did not meet standards for adequate veggie servings. This CAN work, our kids CAN get healthy,inexpensive tasty food they enjoy. It just takes some open minds.
Comrades starving children is feature not bug. Comrade Stalin show future progressives how food is weapon for soviet good. If young child tells school commissar principal parents violate people's rule, children will get food children want.

At the tail end of the linked article, a school district official is bragging about serving "whole grain grits" (as if there's any other kind of grits). Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't grits nutritionally worthless? Is grits something she really wants to be bragging about?
For people who have never eaten grits, nobody eats grits. Grits are merely the medium upon which you paint what you want to eat, like maple syrup or gobs of butter or a healthy pouring of bacon grease, etc. The stuff you put in grits is the stuff Michelle doesn't want the kids eating.
Its like eating warm sand that a cat had used just prior to cooking it...
Grits is basically ground corn, so yes, there IS nutritional value. I prefer to just eat the corn, though. Preferably roasted on the cob.

regardless, grits is a belly filler. also, it featured prominently in my cousin vinny.
And grits are good savory, with salt and pepper, or bacon or cheese. But they are also delicious sweetened with cinnamon. They can be made stiffer, or looser, like cream of wheat or farina. And they are gluten free for those who actually need it.
