• The damfool farm subsidies bugger it all up too, artificially keeping some foods higher and some lower. As far back as "Green Acres," the men of Hooterville discussed what crops they weren't planting that year for the best subsidy!

    • I bring that up every time somebody says he has NEVER told the truth.

• The Consumer Price Index is a work of fiction, just like the government's official unemployment rate. A few years ago they started messing with the CPI to make it more "accurate" and this excuse allowed them to start under-reporting the rate. For instance, the "core" CPI that the Fed uses for monetary policy doesn't include food or energy... exactly what most Americans are affected by most. And the biggest expense for most people - housing - is backwards because they measure housing costs by surveying rents. Rents tend to go down when vacancies are high which happens when housing prices are rising.

  But the biggest lie about the CPI is they started "adjusting" their basket of goodies to reflect "improvements." So if your loaf of bread (food is included in the regular CPI) goes from $1.00 to $1.50 but the government decides that removing 20% of the gluten makes it worth fifty cents more then inflation will be measured as zero. Get it? And of course it's a value judgment as to whether the product actually improved, and of course they never decide a product has gotten worse even though we can point to hundreds of products that actually did get worse, and of course the government hack making the value judgment has a vested interest in keeping the CPI low because it determines military pay, SS payments, government pensions, and the president's job rating.

  It's all bullshit. Everything the government tells us is bullshit.

  Let's not forget that we are now burning 40% (according to the NY Times, July 2012), of our corn.

  Apparently the law of supply and demand is too high a concept for our brilliant legislators to understand. Either that, or they just don't give a damn about how much it costs to eat and are simply taking care of where their bread is buttered.

  Burn 40% of the major food supply in the world, and prices go up. It's not just direct human food - a damn Big Mac is almost 6 bucks now. And that's just the burger - not extra value meal. I'm sure somewhere when talking about this, the word "unexpectedly" is being used by some pernicious little DC snot

• The government hasn't figured out yet that turning our food supply (corn) into low efficiency fuel (ethanol) raises both food and fuel prices, but they will say it's an acceptable hardship if we can stop Globull Warming.

• This looks like another piece of fruit from the tree of socialist planning. Mooch should be happy though, all the little white kids are whining about not having enough food to eat. Obesity isn't going to be the epidemic it's been for the past 20 years - just give starvation a chance, deliverance will arrive!

• IF you are not able to raise your own food and take care of yourself, you are at the mercy of those who are attempting to starve you out or starve you into submission. Always remember "A country boy will survive"

  In other words she believes that if the government could see her financial struggles they'd be inspired to change course???? How deluded can one be? Her (and our) struggles are confirmation that their policies are working just as designed and they might SAY they are changing course but they'd quietly double down on business as usual. Hopefully her teenage sons are smarter than her... not betting on it though.

      Chinese gov could decide to keep supporting the "Whites", much like the United States could have intervened against Lenin or Mao but would only do so if the "whites" where trustworthy.
      Instead, they can only really be trusted to break any deal as soon as it is convenient to them to do so, if anything the best deal China could get from the whole affair is to make sure there are no more troubles coming from Washington DC.
