GoFundMe will raise money for murderers and child molesters… but not for Christian bakeries.

      I find that interesting because the Kentucky T-shirt company's position was actually more Christian: when they were accused of discrimination their reply was that "they weren’t discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation. They were refusing to print a message with which they disagreed." Exactly. As a Christian, you don't have a problem with the existence of gay people. You simply disagree with the message and lifestyle of the gay culture currently being forced upon the nation. In a similar vein, the Christian bakers need to make it clear that they welcome and will serve gay customers -- every customer is a sinner after all -- but they will not be forced to express a message with which they disagree. Free speech, not freedom of religion.

  • I'm completely discouraged with gofundme anyway.
    I started a campaign back between Thanksgiving and Christmas to help a single mom that lost her job, and needed a water heater.
    I only got $20 in donations, of which $18 and change came to me.
    Since she was so worthy of help, I managed to wrangle a scratch and dent water heater donation from Home Depot, and paid for the rest out of my pocket, and bought her daughter Christmas presents, had the family (the mother, her boyfriend, her brother, and the daughter) over for Christmas dinner, and since they had no car at the time, I bought the adults all bus passes. I also gave the boyfriend a job.
    Gofundme didn't even cover the cost of one bus pass. If you aren't a high profile story, don't count on getting any help through them.

    • It's all about the promotion, I guess. Even with some donations from people at this site, our GoFundMe page last year failed miserably in funding our charity tour across the country with our giant rocking unicorn. We managed to make it back home, but just barely, and that was due to a VERY generous friend here in Bakersfield. We ended up the trip, after playing with special kids all the way across the country, about $3,600 in the hole. So there will not be another charity trip until I find a better way of funding them.

      At the same time, some people we know had the transmission go out in their van, and started a page to pay for repairs, and ended up with over seven thousand dollars. They're not even doing charity work, just needed a new transmission. Go figure.

      • Since I see you here in IHTM all the time and never knew you had a GoFundMe campaign, I would say you didn't do a lot of promotion. I knew about the trip, just not about the GoFundMe part.

        Actually, until right now, I didn't know there was a place on the Internet where I could go and ask for money. Watch out world here I come!

        • I have a very low opinion of the circlejerk that is "Gofundme" A.K.A. "Whining for dollars". While there are good causes out there, these people make no effort to vet the causes; some are scams, some are just serial whiners, and a few are actual causes.

          If I'd have known, for example, that the rockinghorse guy needed gas money or the waterheatergal needed a little help, I'd have rather mailed a check or paypalled it. Then again, I'd have expected a thank you note, and that's what gofundme forestalls -- the part of charity where the recipient has to look the giver in the eye (figuratively speaking) and acknowledge the gift and the fact that the giver didn't have to do that.

          If you want a summation of what our government has created with the entitlement mentality, that's it right there. "Free money" isn't free. A social obligation is created, and the government wants to spread the fallacy that it isn't, and that without the social obligation, people will somehow manage to use the free money to get out of the bad situation they are in.

          • The only thing that makes me happy about this is that most people aren't stupid enough to fall for this bullshit.

          • I know a lovely young lady, had her model for me a couple of times, we took some really great photos. She recently had a wee little one, got married, and the two of them love their child a lot. Nice couple.

            They both consider themselves to be artists, doing "African" art. Their art sucks. I'm not just saying this because I'm not a fan of "African" art, I've talked to people who ARE fans, and they say it sucks.

            She hasn't had a job in years. The family is struggling financially, to the point that hubby has gone off to Texas to find work.

            She has a GoFundMe page up, she wants people to buy her a house. She's constantly whining about not getting enough donations to buy her a house in Sacramento. I mentioned to her that even if people DID give her enough to buy a house, she would still need an income to pay taxes, utilities, etc. She needs to get a job.

            I ask why she doesn't go to Texas with hubby, since there are plenty of jobs there that she could get. "Weed is illegal in Texas." Ok, so she's got her priorities straight. No, I haven't contributed to her fundraiser.

          • Yea, I love how these people prioritize.
            They have something on Yahoo Groups called Freecycle. It allows people looking to get rid of stuff to give it to people who really need it, and also allows people to ask for things they need.
            Over the past couple of days I saw the following requests.

            I am in desperate need of a car. They do not provide transportation for my 5 yr old son to go to school and me and my husband work and he doesnt have a way to school please help us

            The nerve of some people never ceases to amaze me!

          • I tried not to make a big deal of it here, because I would rather not hit up my friends for this sort of thing. It just doesn't feel right to me.
            Flash had a great plan, and I donated to it because I really loved what he was doing. His was a big hearted idea on a grand scale. I was just trying to help one family.

          • I really appreciate every donation that we got for that trip. Yeah, it ended up costing me money out of pocket, but I gotta tell you, it was the most rewarding thing I've ever done, and I hope to be able to do it again some day. I can't even talk about some of the experiences I had without a tear in my eye.

            We worked/played with all sorts of special kids, and saw the really special side of them. And I got to make them smile. We thanked each donor, other than the anonymous ones, for allowing us to take that trip.

  • this is the kind of thing that creeps me out about the internet & the public... this power to regulate, on an ad-hoc kind of way, in real-time, whatever they deem right to do... for them, that is.

    that's not a good practice, and will eventually bite them in the ass, too.

    • You would think the market would correct the situation but look at Wikipedia, for example -- there is an alternative called Conservapedia that never seems to have caught up. Why? I suspect because instead of making a point to be objective, they made a point to be as biased as Wikipedia only in the opposite direction. I think that was a mistake. People want their search engines and information resources to be neutral, factual, unbiased.

      • With Wikipedia I find it to be barely biased, if at all, with most of its information. However, this Conservapedia thing is just painful to read.

  • Go fund me takes a percentage anyway..the more you give the more they make for running a website...They could just as well strand on the street corner and rob people...

  • Simple solution is donate directly, then the assholes at this bogus excuse for a charity will dry up and blow away.

  • It's well known on the Left that pedophiles and killers are all victims of racism, sexism, homophobia and assorted other manifestations of pathology, while Christianity is the most heinous crime in human history.

    • Right. Christianity is just too judgmental of behaviors... okay fine it is... so what? As long as Christians aren't decapitating people or hanging gays or throwing gays off buildings gays (and the rest) can do whatever the hell they want... so why exactly are gays (and the rest) forcing their beliefs AND behaviors on others, when that is EXACTLY what they hate others doing to them?
