Tom McInerney casually wondered this morning on Fox News whether maybe jihadis targeted the plane because they need a delivery mechanism for, er, a nuclear weapon.” Feh, just a distraction, unlike climate change which is really real and will harm us in a couple of centuries if we don’t get busy. Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages.   • OK, physics geniuses, help out this ignorant old woman. This is a BIG freakin' plane, yes? It is too big to fly below radar. So HOW did they lose it if it was in the air? Its not like they had a loaking device. Did they?

    • It was able to fly below radar for a time, but it uses much more fuel when it flies that low.

      • For a time. After that, it would pop up on someone's radar, yes? How do you "lose" a plane that is still in the air? Makes no sense to me. Something fishy about this story too.

    Such an increase in altitude and equalizing cabin pressure could be used to kill the passengers. After 911, passengers of a known hijacking will not just sit there. Lots of new info and speculation out there that it may be used for delivery of a weapon of mass destruction.

  • It's been more than a week and it's just now coming to light that the plane was diverted by human intervention. I'm not an expert on planes and flying but I could've told you that much. Geez. It's time for those in charge to admit that 1 they've been lying their asses off and 2 they've got no damn clue where in the hell the plane might be. Misdirection

  • To familiarize myself with the geography of the area, I Google-mapped Malaysia. That is one f***ked up area geo-politically. Borders seem to be drawn willy-nilly with no regard to common sense. Burma and Thailand share the skinny peninsula that ends up suddenly being the west half of Malaysia. The east half of Malyasia is so far from the west half they're probably an entirely different race with an entirely different language. And Indonesia, which starts in the east with a straight line down the middle of an island (the other side of the line being Papua New Guinea), is so all-over-the-place you could literally get on a plane in Indonesia, fly straight west and end up crossing into Malaysia, crossing back into Indonesia, crossing back into Malaysia, and crossing back into Indonesia without ever changing direction. It's like a bunch of drunks playing Risk at three in the morning drew up the borders.

    • Back in the day, wasn't Pakistan split right down the middle by India? And gazillions of people were displaced from both countries when the borders were made more congruent.

    • It's not nearly as convoluted as Sheila Jackson Lee's district boundaries. Maybe we could send her over there to fix that. Or would Malaysia capsize?

    • I suspect Her Britannic Majesty's Colonial Administation may have had something to do with that a hundred or so years ago.

      So -- yeah. Like you said.

  • Alarming -- but as the story eventually notes -- so where is it? An aircraft that size isn't going to land, even less take off, from a makeshift runway bulldozed into the dirt somewhere.

    • I'm thinking it's in Pakistan right now, fully fueled it had the range, and a perfect place to load up a nuke.

      • But would it have been fully fueled? Again as noted, usually they're only filled for the anticipated route -- we all learned that on 9/11 -- plus a bit extra to allow for weather, trafic, and union strikers.So whatever the range from Malaysia to Peking or whatever, that's about their safe radius.

      • Or Somalia. You'll notice that if it kept going west it would end up in Somalia. They hijack giant oil tankers so why not a giant airplane?

        • So everyone is ruling out my James Bond scenario and no way the plane is hidden in a volcano? If I'm right, y'all are going to feel foolish.

          • Someone mentioned today that there are hundreds of abandoned airfields around the world that are left over from WWII. Maybe it's at one of those places?

          • It might be in a volcano but, if so, I don't think "hidden" will properly describe its condition.

  • So if this plane does "return" with a weapon on board and hits a major city, we can count on Obama to:

    1. Play Golf
    2. Write a sternly worded letter to someone
    3. Pee his pants
    4. Panic and hide
    5. Declare Marshall law and make himself emperor for life
    6. Blame Bush
    7. All of the above

    • Actually, there is speculation that this jet will be the new delivery system for Obama's final term of office - which will be for life. He plans on following one of his hero's examples for political success - Stalin. He'll just kill his opponents - anyone who doesn't agree with him.

      • Of course it's Bush's fault. Didn't he put policies in place that made everyone hate us and think we're weak? No, wait. That was Obama. Never mind.

  • When this thing became a real mystery my first (nonserious) thought was the plot of "You Only Live Twice" where SPECTRE captures the Soviet and American space capsules by swallowing them up in its really big space ship. Who'd have though that the jihadis are James Bond fans? Especially with all the vodka martins shaken not stirred being consumed. Not to mention Pussy Galore.
