I hate the foam ear plugs, I can't get them to fit properly. I have several pairs of these soft rubbery plugs that work for me...

I have a hearing loss from using those damn foam ear plugs..I got myself a set of headphones that cancel gunfire but you can hear people talking all the way down the range. Works great when I am doing firearms training with a big group.
I lost a big chunk of my hearing while wearing foam plugs AND shooter's muffs, simultaneously, and at the same time.
One machine damaged my hearing permanently. Hard to prove to get any kind of workmen's comp for it.
Hearing damage is the toughest thing to get compensation for. The VA regularly tells Veterans that there is no way to prove it came from their military service.
Amazingly, I managed to get partial disability from them for my hearing. I have tinnitus and hearing loss, I got 10% for the tinnitus and 0% for hearing loss, but it's on the paperwork, so as it gets worse, there is no way to deny it. I am an unusual case, but then I made copies of ALL my medical records form the military the day I got discharged. The hearing tests I got during my service showed a difference in my hearing during my time in service, so their own records were used as proof.
I can barely hear out of my right ear. Thanks goes to my mother. When I was 10 I had a bad ear infection and my mother didn't take me to the doctor until my right ear was about destroyed inside. It's so bad that if I'm sleeping with my left ear on the pillow I cannot hear an alarm clock a foot away on the night stand.
My dad's 85 and half deaf from being an auto mechanic for decades. He spent about $5k on Belltone hearing aids and hates them. You can't adjust them your self.
On the bright side my wife's aunt and uncle spent a few days with us and he got hearing aids from COSTCO for a grand and loves them and he can adjust them himself.
Another I've read about is some new ones coming out for less than a grand and you can adjust them with a cellphone app.
So far I'm resisting them.
