      • Once he knows, and everyone does, that Kelly is making a straw purchase, it would be against federal law for him to make the sale. Before coming up with the idea to claim he was a straw purchaser, he was just an ordinary hypocrite.

    Most Americans don't like to admit that we have had some "near brushes" with widespread social failure - and not in our distant path; we're talking about just 21 years ago.

    A longtime reader wrote me an email with the subject line "What Changed Me Into A “Gun-Toting Son Of A Bitch”

    "In 1992, I was living in Orange County, California when the verdict from the Rodney King trial was announced.

    Racial tension was already high because of the amount of news coverage and the video that showed Rodney King (a “black” man) being beaten by some of “L.A.’s Finest” police officers (whom were predominantly “white”).

    The officers were charged with “assault and use of excessive force”. The verdict was met with overwhelming astonishment and disbelief. The officers were acquitted of the charges.

    The response by the public was immediate.

    The rioting had begun, there was widespread looting, assault, arson, and murder. There were news helicopters everywhere.

    Everything was being televised. L.A. looked like a war-zone. One of the worst cases, televised live, was the beating of Reginald Denny, a white man driving his truck at the intersection of Florence and Normandie. He was dragged out of his truck by a mob of local black residents and almost beaten to death.

    My children were living with their mother at the time, just two miles from the epicenter of the riots. I was in a panic, I needed to get my children out of there.

    So, I called the ex-wife and told her I was coming to get the kids. She was in “denial”, until she finally turned on the television and then looked out of her front door, and she could see the smoke from the fires.

    Then, she was totally useless, probably frozen from shock. I was going to drive down there and get my kids, but first I called the local (Compton) police department to ask for an escort into their neighborhood. I told them I would be super-fast, just in and out.

    The officer on the phone asked me just one question – “What color are you?” When I told him that I was white, he said, “You’re on your own.” (very distinct in my memory).

    The officer proceeded to tell me that every police officer was in his respective station with all their loved ones, and that I should have my children stay in their home and close everything up until everyone calmed down.

    I looked at the television and saw how terrible the riots were, the violence was escalating. They showed Korean store owners on the rooftops protecting their businesses with AKs, while everything else was burning. There were innocent people being pulled from their cars, being assaulted, being robbed of their belongings. There was no police, no fire department, no military. Everyone seemed to be hiding from their responsibilities.

    Before this moment, I was anti-gun.

    I believed that we, as a society, were becoming more and more civilized, that law and order was equal to everyone. But now, after witnessing this event, seeing the lack of protection, and being a victim of the “every man for himself” attitude of our local law-enforcement agency, I was determined to arm myself. I went to my local gun store to buy a hand gun to protect me as I went to pick up my children.

    As I quickly learned, there was a mandatory 2-week waiting period to receive a hand gun in California. All these rules that were created to protect me, wound up being the rules that could get me killed, that could make me just another un-armed victim.

    That was the day that I decided to be a “Gun-Toting Son of a Bitch”.

    Although I am very thankful that I was able to get my kids to safety that day, it was definitely an eye-opening experience.

    Every American has the Right to Bear Arms, to defend himself and his loved ones. There should be no elected official telling us that we cannot arm ourselves, not while they are cowering in their cubby-holes, as we suffer through the rage of the masses. "

  • Now this lying sack of crap is on TV claiming that it was his plan all along to buy it and turn it over to the police....Again he is full of bullshit and the only reason this is news is because he got caught buying a so called assault weapon....He needs to be watched, I still think he is out for revenge.

    • isn't that a felony? to buy a gun for someone else? you know since he had no intention of keep it for himself...he bought it with the intent to give it away, right?

    • If he is out for revenge, that must qualify as a mental disorder (PTSD?) and he should immediately be placed on a no sell list. Under those circumstances, he is a clear danger to the public.

  • He said he bought it to show how the background check wasn't burdensome. But suppose the background check computer was down that day? They go down a lot, often on gun show weekends. The latest case: November's "Black Friday" sales promo.

    Now imagine that the liberals' dream has come true (since 1968) and you have to get the government's OK to buy a gun - the "universal" (not) background check is in effect. All a future fuhrer (he may be here now) has to do is declare a National Emergency, real or bogus, and shuts down the computers for "public safety" as Los Angeles did during their riots. Viola! An instant gun ban for those who need one NOW. It won't stop the criminals though. They will use that Emergency to prey on those gullible people who thought the authorities would protect them.

    To most of us, the death of these children and adults is a tragedy. To the Democrats, it's a golden opportunity to push their agenda. I have no doubt that another tragedy like Newton would result in just such an emergency, with no end in sight, if we have a liberal president.

    Notice too, that when a citizen buys this semi-automatic version, it is an "assault rifle", but when the government (Homeland Defense) buys 6,000 fully-automatic versions, they are "Personal Defense Weapons". Indeed, some are more equal than others.

  • Considering that EVERY "mass shooting" has been committed by a left winger, i'd say the police better keep any eye on Mr Kelly.

    Its possible he was intending to create some more "facts" on gun violence.

  • Not so silent is spot on. The lying liberal ass hole got caught and busted for it. So now to be in the good graces of the media and all the other dim wits, he will "hand" it over to the PD. Then as it is being taken to the "locker" it will be walked right out the back of headquarters and put in the back of your SUV.

    These people are all about themselves and no one else. It's just fine for them to have all the guns and weapons they want. They are qualified to have them they are so smart. But the average working person is to stupid to have them and therefore we must ban them from having them.

  • This is so wrong on so many levels.
    It's grandstanding in an effort to get some spotlight time for himself, which is disrespectful of his wife and the trauma that she's had to endure.

    It's a stupid waste of an AR that could have been purchased, legally, by a law-abiding gun enthusiast.

    It's wrong because, if he were a real man, he'd be buying it and learning how to use it properly as a weapon of defense, but again, he's wasting it as nothing more than a political prop.
