It is best to remember to approach these stories with the sense of hyperbole that they are presented in.
As for our realizations concerning this matter they are not limited to the article that has been linked here. An article that is not entirely representative of the technology that is being discussed. For more (and more valuable) information on the subject I would strongly suggest Dr. Michio Kaku's Physics of the Impossible. In it Kaku devotes thousands of words to the subject and explains it all in his normal science sound -but pop friendly- method. Amongst other things that you might learn is that the ability to read specific thoughts from minds is decades (if not centuries) away. The technology being perused in the here and now is using bio-feedback exercises to train the brain to "think" in certain ways that can be interpreted as commands to a computer.
I watched many videos by Kaku and honestly I think he is a bit dramatic. Even though he is a theoretical scientist most of his theories and ideas are only concerning futurist ambitions. Some of the things he says sounds like it was taken from a sci fi film such as having clothing that can call 911. Don't get me wrong--he is definetly a smart man but I feel he isn't as realistic at times.
After all he was the same scientist that proclaim the damaged nuclear reactor was just as bad as the Chernobyl disaster. He also stated that the Japanese government was out of touch with the people causing them to be too stubborn to fix the nuclear reactor. He dramatized it WAY too much.
I agree Kaku has a tendency to over-hype a number of things when he lets his political bias gets out of hand. And that is a very good call about his stance on the Japanese reactor . . . I think a lot of the drama and exuberance that comes through the videos and audio segments is that of a man trying to excite people with concepts and notions that they might not have been exposed to and may be very apathetic towards. There is some of that in his books (what I meant by pop friendly in the earlier post) but they generally pass that phase early in the introduction of new topics.
I've never really thought of him as a futurist, although I guess that is the track of his last two books. What might distinguish him from that group is that his predictions are more . . . "is this possible, how possible is it, what would have to happen before it could happen, how long till man kind has this sort of ability". The interviews and videos might be somewhat blunter or placing more emphasis on the fantastic though, I will have to view some more.
Of course even given his remarkable intelligence Kaku can't control certain laws of nature. And, as always happens when conjecture about the future is made the prophetic at some point seems laughable as we are only able to predict arithmetically and man's progress is in the geometric.

Oh wow, I just searched Michio Kaku on youtube . . . ok I can completely see your concern . . . there is definitely a stench of PT Barnum permeating. Please sift through all that and find vid of the guy talking about hard science (well as hard science as theoretical physics gets) . . . it will be worth it!

Get with the program IBM. I've been married to a mind reading machine for the past 18 years. Saves a lot of talking on my part. Typical conversation goes like this:
Me: "Honey do you know where.."
Her: "Top drawer in the study"
Me: "Yep..tha.....
Her: "Your welcome"
With Barry it would read nothing but....Me Me Me Me Me Me.....
