Charles Montesquieu, who was one of the Framer's inspirations for the Constitution, said that there are only three basic kinds of governments: a Republic, a Monarchy and a Despotic state, or Dictatorship. Barack Obama stated four year ago that he wanted to fundamentally change the United States. Allowing that Montesquie was correct, that means Obama either wants to be our king or our dictator. Either way, my answer is NO! You cannot fundamentally change America without it ceasing to be America.

I view this tactic dimly. Obama is as American as any of us. The meanings of that statement are myriad.
Does this mean he's more qualified than Romney to be President? Absolutely not.

My strategy is to appeal to as many as possible to wake up and alienate themselves from this failure of an "American" President.
There are immigrants who have lived a fraction of their life in this country but have gone through the process and taken the oath to become American citizens. Many have come from oppressive governments because they have seen the freedom America has stood for. They are more American than some that were born and raised here but brainwashed to be as anti-American as TheDarkTool. They would like to see America fundamentally transformed by Obama and his ilk into a socialist communist country. The same type of oppressive government many have come here to get away from.

I dunno, when i think planned economy, i think Soviets, or Cuba, or Hugo down in Venezuala (nothing but toothpaste on the shelves..). When i think of Cap & Trade, i think of acid rain reductions in the north-east--where i mostly grew up--as a result of a Republican market-based proposal to control certain pollutants (pleasantly signed into law by Bush the Elder). When I think of ObamaCare, i don't see government run healthcare, like you might see in the VA or the NHS over in the U.K., i just see government mandated purchase of insurance (soon to be stricken down?), and regulations on that market. I also see the Heritage Foundation looming when i consider the history of Individual Mandate. Laughably, Republicans have selected the one guy who implemented them to oppose Obama.
Certain fusions of private and public forces are palatable to me. I send my kids to public schools, not indoctrination camps. I view an educated populace as necessity in modern nations, and do not trust the free market to cover everyone. I don't mind feds getting involved in student loans, however i can still apply for one at WellsFargo, so don't see the control you are talking about.
I generally don't have time for histrionics of this kind, and have no fear of some Soviet-style coup. When trying to figure out the direction of the economy, i find myself very much more often looking towards The Fed then I do at Presidents..
We enjoy this discussion because of a platform assembled by government and academia (2 oft-cursed institutions for which i still hold some respect, flawed as they are). No one here, as yet, has proven to me otherwise

As far as I'm concerned you are looking through rose colored glasses. We definitely see two different governments. Cap and Trade is a scam that is ripe with fraud and corruption. It's good as dead here but Obama would probably try to resurrect it if re-elected. I hope ObamaCare is struck down because it is designed to be single payer and government run. It may be stripped down but will be bloated back to it's original objective if Obama is re-elected.
Romney was not my 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th choice as a nominee but I'll gladly vote for him over Obama.
My kids went to private school where they were indoctrinated with morals and got a good education to boot.

Cap&Trade is a market-based technique. Its not simply "good as dead" here, it was in fact implemented in the Clean Air Act back in 1990. It controlled sulfur-dioxide emissions so that fish wouldn't melt in the Adirondacks. In my non-Rosian view of things, this was preferable to government mandates.
Also it was a Republican idea.
It worked quite well. Some critics will say it didn't, and that other EPA regulations actually did the trick. Which do you choose? And if there was a scam, please illustrate.
I can say all of this while not being a proponent of carbon emissions trading. I have other plans for climate control which involve L1, L4, & L5 and artificially induced cosmic rays.
I'll blame both sides also, to the extent that the Republican party has been infiltrated with too many RINOs. I'm convinced our only hope of even working toward getting out of debt is Romney having long enough coat tails to take control of the Hill with enough true conservatives to make a difference.

@wayward You're talking about Cap & Trade, specifically applied to carbon emissions.. its not always about carbon.
Like Sidekick said, its creates an exchange. Its a strategy, meant to avoid direct government regulation, which can be applied to acidic emissions, carbon dioxide, or puppydung, if that's the prevailing thing. It permits an industry to organize its own path to a new regulatory state through transactions with itself, rather then paying fines and following a strict government regime.
I can search for anything + "corruption" and strike gold. Like most any system, cap&trade surely isn't immune to corrupting influences.
I don't care who came up with it, it's dead, at least for now, and good riddance.

You are right it was originally a Republican idea or at least the Heritage Foundation's idea. I do not believe it is market based other than an exchange is created. Widely implemented, it would be a scheme that would make a lot money for the insiders but does nothing (that I can see) that would actually make the air or water cleaner.

Even allowing that he was born in Hawaii, as he insists, it is a matter of record that he was not RAISED in America. Nearly his entire formative years were spent in Indonesia or elsewhere. No Cub Scouts, no Little League, no Fruited Plain, no Purple Mountain's Majesty...none. He is about as American as his buddy, George Soros. He does not have the proper frame of reference to be President of the United States.
