• I wish I had put this in a more appropriate thread. Too bad. Anyway the row between Mark Steyn and his editor (over the Phil Robertson v a&e distraction) has gotten interesting. • The US would be better if many states amalgamated so it only had 10-20 states, With stronger states they could wrest some of the power back from the Federal Government. Would be nice to see many of the smaller eastern seaboard states join and reduce there numbers in the senate.

  • You'd still have to get rid of the leftists in local and state governments and in the various state bureaucracies. Even one lefty is like an AIDS virus, given time and money, they can kill the whole body.

• It is a waste of time modifying their relationship with the US. Too many bitter-clingers in red states screwing up plans for utopia. Why not make their own country with six states? Think of the possibilities! They can create the socialist democrat-party controlled utopia they have always been dreaming of. No guns, no religion, no opposing voices allowed. 100 % union workes. Ban cars (except for the party elite) and make 100 % green energy and trains, and sign on to the Kyoto protocols. They can have open boarders with Mexico. No military of course. They can ask the blue helmets of the UN to police the new country. Best of all, they can suspend elections forever and have all democrat party rule all the time.

  • It might work out. Make LA County a state, make San Franfreako area a state, and make 4 other states. We would end up with more electoral votes going Rep, and 4 new Red States.

    • It's not a gimme. According to stats in the huff post (google California electoral votes, you'll see the map there in the results - I got it second on the list), it breaks down this way:

      Obmana got:

      Central Coast, incl SF - 76%
      LA & area - 69%
      N. CA (Tahoe to Sonoma, the purple one) - 60%
      S. CA (SD, Sonoran Desert, Imperial Valley) - 51%
      Central CA (inland, Fresno, etc. - 49%
      Way north - 48%

      This is of course, just one election with its own ramifications and idiosyncracies (not to mention idiots). Some things to consider:

      Many people I would guess don't bother to vote since the result is pretty much a fate accompli - the D is getting the electoral votes.

      But that may be the case not only on the R side.

      The candidates don't bother to spend a lot of time in CA, since there's not much they can do to change the result.

      Southern CA (SD etc), could be one of those areas that some strong campaigning on the part of an R could swing that 51%. But on the other hand, it's an area that is probably getting more Mexican by the day, so it may be an uphill battle.

      The best case is the R getting 3 of them. Which is still pretty good, considering that Central and way north would be about 12 electoral votes compared with nothing now. Southern would be the big battleground with another 17.

          Loosely along this line, you recall how the libs were wailing about "democraceeeeee" when Algore lost in the electoral college. Just for jollies I added up the votes in an NJ legislative election. You remember NJ probably when it would still often vote for Regan, Nixon, etc. It's been a bit blue lately (Thanks, Chritie "witless' Whitman).

          Well, when I added up all the votes in all the districts, the R assembly and senate candidates got more votes than the D's. So one would think the majority spoke? Nope - due not as much to gerrymadering as to voter turnout, the D's have solid majorities in both houses.

          In this part of Florida, I'm paying about $500/year for property taxes, and no state income tax.
