Some municipalities authorized firefighters to carry firearms during the MLK riots. I lived in Little Rock AR at the time and remember it was well known.
My uncle was an engineer on a fire crew way back in the sixties during the San Bernardino race riots. They wouldn't allow him to carry a firearm on the truck, so he clandestinely popped a few rioters in the head with his slingshot and some hardballs.
I keep a wrist rocket and a couple hundred marbles handy for just such occasions.

I'd love to be chief of that station. I'd declare all of my vehicles unsafe until a comprehensive inspection was made to ensure a bullet had not damaged anything that might put my crews at risk. Let the neighborhood burn to the ground around me while waiting for said inspections to be completed.
The shooter (in this case Moron with a gun) would be the first to provide the TV news with an interview after the cops shot him saying "Da firemen didn't come quick enough and I could have bleeded to death"..."I am a victim"....Probably one of them collage students who wants a free pass....
They wear a uniform and drive a vehicle with flashing lights on top. That's all they need to know when choosing a target. Next it will be tow truck drivers.
