Maldavian President planning to move country to Australia if climate change sinks his country

Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed is considering Australia as a possible new home if the achipelago disappears beneath rising seas. Why not Al Gore’s house? It’s big enough. BTW, Preacher William Miller was sure the world was going to end October 22, 1844 – an obviously wrong prediction. But that was religion, the Maldavian Obama is talking about settled science….

  • Aren't the people of Australia worried about all those new residents tipping the island over? ;-)

  • "Eighty per cent of the Maldivian land mass - a string of more than 1200 islands, 200 inhabited, running 750 kilometres north-south in the Indian Ocean - is less than a metre above sea level. The highest point in the entire country is 2.4 metres above sea level, and already, 14 islands have had to be abandoned because of massive erosion by the sea."

Seems that's not the best choice for real estate anyway, Global Warming (TM) or not. The sea is always eroding stuff away, ya know.

  • The governments of Sri Lanka and India would never allow 350,000 Maldivians to migrate to their countries, period. Australia, of course, would allow the proposed migration, provide housing, subsistence and maybe grant them independent status and the taxpayers of Australia can expunge their guilt by paying the bills.

    • So that's what happened to Detroit!!! And Chicago, and LA, and New Orleans, and ..........

  • The Maldivian President needn't worry. The world will end (21 Dec 2012) way before his nation disappears under the sea.

  • Does Australia have any say in this? Or does this Maldavion moron just think he can move and take over a large part of another country? Sounds like an invasion threat to me....

  • They are looking for the nearest welfare culture so that they don't have to pay the bill for the larger share of their population, which undoubtedly hovers just below the poverty line. Mohamed is just trying to figure out a way to keep more of the tourist revenue for himself. This BS about sea levels is just that, BS. Erosion? Well, hello! You live on an islands, fer cryin' out loud! The perception of climate change causing sea levels to rise is unproven and it's being used to panic the population into submitting to government controls that will place greater and greater power in the hands of evil tyrants. They live among us!

    • As long as there are significant portions of Maldavia that are more than a couple millimeters above sea level, they should be ok.

  • Our (Australian) Fabian-run socialist government already has an open borders policy so the Maldive scum may as well boat into the country now and quit waiting. White genocide: it's what's for breakfast.
