Maybe I should have been more specific. Trump took the time to greet and talk to the 6 year old son of a fallen Marine. Obama never showed respect for the military, in fact he was openly antagonistic toward the military.

Luckily, no KIA's as far as military in my family either. My Dad was a veteran of the Korean War and my step-dad was a sailor who saw no action. Unfortunately, I do have non-military family who were killed directly as a result of Nazism and Soviet occupation in Eastern Europe. That is what makes me skeptical about one-size-fits-all policies for the masses.
Anyway, my thanks and condolences for those with losses who are remembering their war heroes today.

My father got real lucky. He was stationed at a SAC base, and was supposed to go on a training mission, but was 2 lbs overweight, so he was grounded. The flight went up and crashed, no survivors.

My dad has a life-long beef with one particular airborne group but I don't think it was your great uncle's. What happened is they dropped into a town on D-Day, encountered light resistance, took the town, and then raided the wine cellars and got drunk. The Germans then proceeded to take the town back with little resistance from the drunk and hungover paratroopers. And why does my dad have a beef with them? Because my dad's regular Army regiment had to take it back from the Germans and he lost a lot of friends in the process. Some things are too serious to warrant forgiveness even after seventy years I guess.
And don't get him started on the Red Ball Express, which they always make look so heroic in the movies. Those guys were best known for stealing supplies to trade for alcohol and food from the French, and for going AWOL and shacking up in Paris until they ran out of same.
Well as another aside the Germans poisoned wells when they were retreating. I remember he said he was in one town where the only thing safe to drink was the booze. Perhaps it was his regiment...lol
Yeah the Germans left a lot of booby traps behind as they retreated. Dad stopped once with one foot against a wire leading across a sidewalk. His bodyguard, walking beside him, was really weirded out. And U.S. troops loved German hand grenades because they were much better than ours, but you had to be careful because once they realized they were getting their own thrown at them, they started booby trapping them when they left them behind.

I have no such family members but I still commemorate ALL soldiers who died during battle and veterans who have died since the beginning of this country. I am grateful for their sacrifice.
