Mixed messages at “Day of Rage”

No unifying theme to Day of Rage: half the protesters wanted more taxes and more of a welfare state, while the other half wanted to “Decentralize everything.” The protesters agree they all want to blow up capitalism, but can’t make up their minds which side they want the rubble to fall on. A stimulus-sized failure, but it’s not a total loss; we think the woman with the “Dump Obama” poster definitely has talent and a bright future.

Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. • When you look at these walking bill boards for stupid and dangerous, think about what Bill ayers and Bernadine Dohr looked like forty years ago. Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden(Mr. Jane Fonda)et. al., were part of that filth laden crowd and they passed the nastiness torch. I don't know how long the evolutionary period is going to have to be to rid us of these vermin.

  • I love the home-spun, hemp clothing all these hippies are wearing. That will show us capitalist pigs! Oh.... wait!

  • If you wanted to make them scatter you could rename it "A Day of Work". Have soap buckets and sponges deposited about to scrub the pavement to clense the Earth. Just to see how long that they would stick around.

    • That's how Hank ("King of the") Hill chased the hippies out of the state park. He was gonna show 'em how to Love Mother Earth by picking up all the trash they'd left. They split that scene fast, man.

      Yup.
      Yup.
      Yup.
      Mmm-hmm.

  • Looks like the day of rage turned into a day of sniveling....and stupidity...But hey its what liberals do best. They expected millions, and got a few thousand disorganized, confused, and I am sure paid hacks to show up....Whooooooo I have seen more excitement at the opening of a new library....

  • As the smell of patchouli oil wafted through the crowd, and the din of Phil Lesh's "Box Of Rain" could be heard echoing lightly off the skyscrapers built by the very capitalists they were there to protest, danny couldn't help but wonder, after taking a large hit off of the bright red, three foot tall bong: I wonder if things would have been different if the three stooges could fly like superman?

Suddenly, he was snapped out of his daydream of slapstick characters faster than speeding bullets, when a riot cop, in full defensive regalia, cracked his forehead open in one deliberate blow from his police baton. The hippie, at once, found himself in another daydream. Only this time, it was filled with the acrid stench of tear gas, and the 150 degree heat of the crowd disbursing microwave projecting police vehicle, and the screams of his friends Desert Flower, and Starbeam, being crushed beneath the feet of eighteen hand tall horses, ridden by mounted police.

In the ensuing confusion, Danny was separated from his bong, and his backpack full of "the creeper" and pound of "shrooms". Realizing his parents were going to kill him when they learned the $10,000 stash of weed and shrooms was gone, Danny decided he would go back on the road, once again following the last few members of the Grateful Dead, not yet in mental institutions or retirement homes.

That is how would have liked to have seen it go down. Either that, or about 5,000 skin-heads bussed in from Tennessee, Georgia, and Mississippi, with axe handles and switchblades, to teach these filthy hippie shitbirds the lessons their parents were too much of a bunch of pussies to teach them!

    • Hey, its just a box of rain. I don't know who put it there. Believe it if you need it . . . or leave it if you dare. And it's just a box of rain or a ribbon for your hair. Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there.

The Dead have always been largely miss with me (I think of them as a great singles band) but American Beauty is a favorite!

      • a lot of the trust-funders I grew up with in Lake Forest, IL followed the dead, living on their parents' gold cards(kind of counter to the counter-culture eh). SO, the dead were jammed down my throat-and while I did venture to see them a few times, I found it to be boring and tedious. That said, one of the best songs I have ever heard in my life is box of rain. For some reason the first time I heard it I wept. And it stuck with me-and since I didn't want to sound like a guy who only knew shakedown st or touch of grey-I used a dead head's dead song.
The stench of patchouli, weed, and b.o. at a dead show is really a rank odor, one that can't be done justice with words-one has to experience it to know just how rancid it smells at a dead show. Still, some of my best friends growing up were dead heads, though they wore polo shirts and docksiders!

  • Of course, the one thing they both agree on is smoking weed.

So why don't they just go back to mommy's basement, get stoned, and let the grownups run things?

  • With a decentralize sign that person could easily be a libertarian, Ron Paul voter, or Tea Party member in disguise. What these people don't get is many conservative ideas are more to their liking than the crap the Democrats give them. Same with the dump Obama person.

    • No, that one's probably a LaRouche - ite, judging by the signs in back of her. They're he official most-batshit-crazy arm of the Democrats.

    • That's also the Zombie's opinion:

"I feel this is a turning point in the anti-capitalist movement; the failure of the much-hyped Day of Rage proved that the communists and the anarchists never will be able to smooth over their differences, and the far-left will necessarily fracture in two. The anarchists will break free of their socialist bedmates and drift more toward honest extreme libertarianism and anti-authoritarianism; while Team Marx will no longer feel the need to temper their collectivist message with a bunch of dishonest slogans about freedom and independence. "

      • Good opinion!! But you've got to be careful with the anarchists. Some of them are nowhere near libertarian. They're still communist but subscribe the the Marxian notion that after the establishment of the rule of the proletariat the state will "wither away". Of course they still believe in an all powerful entity needed to ensure that the most productive are giving up their liberty and property to the "leaders" in the name of the least productive. But instead of government they call this cooperatives. Which is just like government but without that pesky lip service to self sovereignty. They're very clever in their doublethink and speak.

Hopefully this Zombie is right though . . . and the real anarchists will drift off. Although I'd rather see them become minarchists.
