First, I'll say that poll manipulation is a given. It is beyond question. I've seen the quote credited to Mark Twain: "first there are lies, then there are damned lies, then there are statistics."
But in this case, I think it is just as likely that we are seeing colossal innumeracy (that's illiteracy in the field of numbers and math). I see it all the time - in the news and in sports reporting. The media is by and large filled with people who have no ability to grasp anything mathematical.
I heard a couple of talk show hosts on NJ 101.5 devote an hour to discussing a study which "showed" that keeping your virginity into the mid-20's is likely to cause problems with relationships (uhh ... problems with relationships is why they are virgins at 25, not the other way around. Can it be more obvious? Only a PhD can come up with that bass-ackwards a conclusion). And these radio guys picked up this press release and parotted it without batting an eye?
I have not had the opportunity to speak with media members, but I have tried to explain to libs (same thing, really), why comparing incomes of all women to all men, or all black college grads to all white college grads is comparing apples to oranges. or why second-hand smoke related illness stats are simply BS, I got blank, almost comatose looking stares in every case.
I think this writer truly believed what he/she wrote.
Brian Williams in charge of polls? He could be, didn't he run the poll taking for Abraham Lincoln?
Lyin' Brian is back on TV at MSNBC. Maybe he's helping the parent outfit to interpret polls - to keep from getting rusty.
