Now Obama’s NLRB tells a church school it’s not religious enough. Yes, the oldest Catholic school in Illinois, established in 1846 is now not religious enough. I guess separation of church and state doesn’t apply if Obama’s government goons smell union votes. Especially when it looks like Obama will need every vote he can muster in 2012 due to his rating downgrades.

  • O, in any event, "Olivia" or whatever you are, don't you think that the government trying to decide whether a school is 'religious enough' is the very essence of state interference in religious matters? If they can do that, can they decide whether Unitarians are 'religious enough' to qualify as a church? Or Methodists?

    • That is exactly what Jefferson would say. That is his actual intentions behind his (not in the constitution) statements to a Baptist preacher. Religions have to be protected from government interferance. Once government seeks to control religion you get Sharia or Nazism. Not good.

  • Once again Olivia you have come to the right place for a basic Civics and Government class. Membership to the NLRB is an appointed position by the president. So there fore it is barry's NLRB as he has appointed the majority members that are currently serving on it. The internet is a wonderful place and a few key strokes and you can find just about anything out that you want to.

    Now onto the matter of the NLRB and it’s meddling in a private school and a private religious school. This administration needs to march itself down to the National Archives and read the Constitution of the United States of America and the Bill of Rights. This administration is nothing more than a banana republic trying to act like a government.

      Her use of the term "OUR NLRB" is clear evidence that she has no clue as to who had any say in it's construction, though it is well in keeping with her belief that a large portion of any corporate profits from any source, as well as the cash in your wallet, are OURS to do with as WE see fit.

  • Classic far right creative reporting of facts: to use an opinion piece, rather than an unbiased news account, to tell the story.

    First, it is not "Obama's" NLRB, and it's both silly and dishonest to try to insinuate that he had anything whatsoever to do with this decision. It's OUR NLRB, and their job is to ensure that current policies (as determined by existing law and legal precedent) are followed.

    Second, the age of the institution is irrelevant. Whether it's been around for 1 year or 1000 years makes no difference-----the issue here is whether, according to existing law and legal precedent, the school qualifies as a RELIGIOUS school, which would protect its decision to disallow unionizing of its employees.

    Third, this has nothing to do with "goons," and everything to do with the school's religious affiliation (or lack thereof). Just calling itself a Catholic school, naming it after a saint, and employing a few nuns, isn't sufficient grounds to justify the banning of union activity.

    __Among the institutional attributes that Mr. Barker cited in holding Saint Xavier University to be secular enough to fall under the board's purview were the lack of any reference to religion in Xavier's articles of incorporation; the presence of only five members of its founding religious order, the Sisters of Mercy, among the 24 voting members on its Board of Trustees; its reliance on the Catholic Church for only a small portion of its funds; and its lack of any requirements that students take courses in Roman Catholicism.

        Wrong. Unless the president is taking an active role in directing the decisions made by the NLRB, it is not his/her board.

  • In the confusion following the Second Vatican Council, too many Catholic institutions tried to secularize to find favor, power, and money from the world and government. It's sort of surreal but now the world and government are saying you're not religious enough.
