  • Ah jeeze, now I find you. Brought up the Tulip Bulb Crash in a prewebz convo and all I got was ayfs stares. One guy turned out to be a potential client years later (we didn't get it) and one was pretty cute (later that night she said no to a date).

    • You mean there is/are/were actually people who are unaware of that little bit of history? Even in the prewebz days?

      Hell, to the best of my knowledge that was the first stock bubble crash.

      And, if I am not mistaken (although without further research, as it has been over 30 years since I read of it: In an actually book with binding and everything) it was also the first time it forced the market to put some kind of regulations in place.

      • There's another famous one that I recently read about, involving the Battle of Waterloo. I can't remember the commodities involved, but somebody had messengers waiting for the outcome of the battle and they raced across the Channel to get the news to London before anybody else knew and they made a bloody fortune trading on their advance knowledge of Napoleon's defeat. The fortune was made even bigger by the fact that many of England's Dutch allies turned and ran as soon as the battle started, fleeing back to the coast, so the first news to hit London, brought by refugees, was that Wellington had suffered a horrible defeat.

• Better get ready for the water control scheme aspect of this, such as if you want to water your crops, from your own well, you're going to have to pay the local "climate hub administrator" for the privilege. Otherwise your water goes to the Agra-business that did grease their palms.

• The best way for the communists in DC to win is to unrelentlingly unleash program after program thereby overwhelming the system as it is designed to work. Obamacare will never be fixed because these people are off to the next program. Social Security is a failure, no problem. The administration is going to force us into MyRAs. Post office is going broke? No sweat, Senator Warren is proposing the postal service replace payday lenders (which undoubtedly will be regulated out of existence to make room for a federal union work force to make those same loans) by acting as a bank.

• According to Ag. Sec. Vilsack, US farmers face a "new...threat of changing and shifting climate." I wonder if he could explain when it was that farmers did not have to deal with a changing climate - the last Ice Age, maybe?
