Obama – ‘If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen’ There King Barry goes again. The man that has never done anything in his entire life is now lecturing those that did on how they owe him and the statist system. A system that has mostly done nothing but impede talent and ability while confiscating large portions of the success that has managed to claw its way through the hostile environment that government has created.

  • Obama reminds me of a young man I used to know. A very ignorant young man. In the process of promoting my rocking horse business, I gave him a handful of my business cards, told him to write his name and phone number on the back, and give them to people that might be looking for party entertainment.

    I told him that if someone called me from one of his cards, and booked a party, I would give him 10%. If he wanted to go and help me out at the party, he would get another 10%. My minimum charge for a party is $400. He did some calculations in his head. I'm pretty sure I saw smoke coming out of his ears. Then he said, "I find the party for you and work for four hours, and I get $80? That means you get,....um,...er,..."

    "$320. Right."

    "But, I would be working just as hard as you do, shouldn't I get half?"

    I was stunned, but recovered quickly. "Mikey, the last time I was up all night in the garage, doing maintenance work on my horses, loading them on the trailer, driving to or from an event to get home just in time to change clothes and go to work for the day, the last time I was sitting at my desk, writing checks for insurance, fuel, truck payments, etc., the countless hours I put in making my horses, setting up booths at events before the crew even shows up,........I don't remember you being there. $80 for four hours work is $20 an hour. Cash. You've never made over minimum wage in your life, and couldn't keep a job at that. In fact, give me those cards back. You're not bright enough to work for me."

    Yes, Obama reminds me of Mikey, who is now doing shitty tattoos and piercings out of a VW bus in WalMart parking lots near you. Kiss my ass, Obama.

  • Years ago, I used to have a friend who was envious of everything I had. She hadn't known me back when my husband and I lived in a tiny one-bedroom apartment, and were sharing a 15-year-old car and working crap jobs to make ends meet. She met me after I became a homeowner, had a decent job, a good car, and was going to school. She deduced that everything I had must be because I was "lucky," not because I had worked hard or made good choices. By her logic, she must be unlucky, and therefore it wasn't her fault that she didn't have the same things.

    For Obama to make a statement like this is at the very least stunningly ignorant, and at worst outright insulting to small business owners, who've put blood, sweat, and tears (not to mention lots and lots of their own time and money) into building their businesses.

    • I know it's an old story, but just think about how many times business owners don't take home a paycheck because the employees, insurance, utilities, etc, etc, etc, have to get paid first, and we are awiting for that check to come in the mail from the customer that is already benefitting from our labor and cost of materials/stock. They think we're all rich because we own a business, so we won't miss it if they take their time paying up.
      I paid one of my suppliers with my debit card once, a few hundred dollars for a countertop for a kitchen job. When I was reconciling my accounts 3 weeks later, I discovered that they hadn't taken the money from my bank yet. I called and asked them if there was a problem, and they had no idea what was going on! They checked with their CC processing service and found that they had dropped the ball and there were over $15,000 in credit charges that they hadn't processed yet! I couldn't imagine what kind of financial issues that might have caused them.

        Two years ago, the evil, “greedy corporation” that I work for has finalized contract negotiations with the merciful and beneficent government. We proceeded to fulfill our obligations regarding the contract. According to the contract we are required to purchase ALL of the inventory needed to manufacture the product. We are required to manufacture all of the product stated in the contract. We are required to store all of the product until the merciful and beneficent government requires delivery. They may ask for some of the product or all of the product, but we are to wait patiently for them to pay us for our labor and product. According to the contract, they have no payment schedule. They can and will pay us when and if it is convenient for them.
        In the mean time, we have spent millions of dollars on resources and labor to fulfill our obligations. If the defense cuts are not revised, it is possible that our merciful and beneficent government can cancel the contract without pay and we have no recourse. This product will most likely not be marketable, because it is custom made for the requirements of the contract.

        The poor economy has already hurt our business and this could possibly be the end of a very good company. It’s ALWAYS bad to sleep with the devil, unless you enjoy being bit.

  • This is exactly how socialists think. They believe that the government is the true source of all good in a society. Individuals are nothing without their esteemed leaders guiding them through life. Socialism demands that the "individual" be diminished as much as possible. Socialists view individuals as nothing more than mere parts of the "collective." Obama's comments showcase this kind of thinking - NEVER credit the individual (unless you are giving credit to one of the blessed leaders like Obama.) Instead, ALWAYS praise the collective.

    All the cash you sent me, the legal help you offered, the help with paying for workmans comp, liability insurance, salaries, equipment, vehicles, materials, etc, etc, etc.
    It was such a pleasure to sit on my ass and watch everything get done by others.

        • Wow, was in my mid 20's when I read "Confederacy" and loved it. Just downloaded an audio version from my county's digital library page where it's listed as "Available copies: always available". Gonna give it a well deserved rerun, thanks for the reminder.

            Just to make sure I piss off John, I should mention that I buy all my photographic equipment and supplies from them, too. And that I DO pay for. To the corporation that makes them, to the corporation that sells them, to the corporation that delivers them. Greedy bastards all. Then, not even being a corporation myself, (yet), I charge people money to take their pictures. Why? Because I'm a greedy bastard.

It gave me a thrill when I re-watched "Sling Blade" recently, and in the scene toward the end, when Karl goes to Vaughan's house to tell him to take care of Frank and his mom, to see that Vaughan is holding a copy of "Confederacy," easily distinguished by its distinctive cover.

          I've always wanted to see a movie made of it, but I fear no movie could do it justice. Will Ferrell has said that it's the movie everyone wants to make, but no one wants to produce. (I think Ferrell could actually do a good Ignatius, with a fat suit)
