Actually, I'd say that it takes less than 200-300 years ago. Look at the the suffering of the Jews in WWII. We give less deference and support to living survivors of the Holocaust than we do in benes to African Americans.
You can talk about Jim Crow laws and their effects, that is a recent, or at least within this lifetime effect.
