Happened to me several times hitch-hiking, too, when I was 18-21 (back in the late-70s, early-80s).
One was a SUNY-Albany psych prof (or so he said), in his 40s, who started chatting me up first about the Kinsey Report, then the Hite Report, then talked about being paid to appear in a gay porn film, and then started giving me the creeps (i.e., not taking a hint that I didn't want the conversation to go anywhere near that direction). Fortunately we were approaching an I-80 toll stop, and I told him "I'm getting out here," which I did (even though I was going through on I-80). The creepy thing was I had to wait there for my next ride for like 30 minutes, and before I left I saw the same guy pass through again in his car and pick up the hitchhiker ahead of me -- he'd obviously circled around and was cruising.
Another time I was hitching from Boston to Cape Cod. Guy gave me a lift, also in is 40s, started chatting, I noticed he turned off the usual route, then asked me to look in the glove-box and read a pamphlet there. It was an instruction manual for something called an "Accu-Jack", some electric sex-toy masturbator. I put it back, told him I had no interest, and he tried to steer the conversation back toward it. Once again, I told him as we approached a turnoff: "I'm getting out at this exit," and motioned for my door handle. He started to try to talk me out of it, but I repeated it again firmly, and he stopped. But it was very unpleasant.
I had several similar incidents with really sleazy guys in Spain (mainly Arabs) -- enough to make me sympathetic to women who get hit on.
I haven't hitch-hiked much since.
I support gay-marriage (and civil unions) and I oppose laws against homosexuality (especially the horrific ones in Muslim-majority countries), but making passes at young hitchhikers is not cool.
I guess I wasn't cute enough. Nobody ever hit on me when I hitchhiked as a kid.
Obviously linking child molestors to homosexuals was incorrect but in those times I suppose people didn't know the difference. There are child molestors who deny the label of homosexuals and of course being an homosexual doesn't automatically mean that he is a pedophile. It is an interesting video, had it made the right distinction and used the correct terminology it would have made better sense.
Hitchhiking and going out with someone you and your family do not know is dangerous and reckless. That is what it should have said regardless as there are all kinds of evil out there.
This is ridiculous. They are not homosexuals- they are pedophiles. There's a HUGE difference. Homosexuals are attracted to members of the same sex, whereas pedophiles are attracted to children. Homosexuality is not a disorder, and is not considered one by the American Psychological Association, whereas pedophiles are sick and in need of help. If young girls hitchhiked as often as boys, it would happen to them too.
Yes, younger boys should be careful when hitchhiking, or not just go at all if they can, but it's not homosexuals only, or straight people only that molest people.

Yes, girls do get molested. In all of society, girls get molested; in cars, out of cars. But it's a curious question: Do homosexuals over-represent themselves in child molestation cases? Shouldn't Catholic priests have molested girls in the same proportions as there are heterosexual men in society? They didn't. 81% of Catholic molestation episodes were man-on-boy. As for girls? Who's raping THEM? I very well understand that there are pedofile/ molesters that are homosexual or have homosexual tendancies. However, ths video implies that all homosexuals are that way. which is wrong. the percent of sexual preditors that classify as gay is about 3-5% when related to the Gay communitys population. compaired to a 25-30% in striaght male molesters. Wich goes to show that straight men are far more likely to molest a child than a homosexual is. thats the ugly truth.

We have come a long way since the 50's & 60's PSA in regards to ignorance, but back then, it was assumed that if a man had sex with boys he was gay...they really didn't have the sex predator label until much later that didn't distinguish the sexuality of the perpetrator. A predator is still a predator.
This PSA was most likely the kind shown only to boys in 5th grade sex ed class, just like the 'rape' ones that were shown only to girls. We were shown (boys & girls together) anti-hitchhiking PSA like this back in the 60's.
Twice as a child I was being coerced to get in a car with a stranger (never did) but it was very frightening to say the least.
As for the confusing a gay person with a sex predator, I think a large percentage of sex predators are hetero, but to me, NAMBLA is a sex predator organization.

If all of them were closeted gays (and you're going to say they are, I just know it), and that was "most of these closeted gays," then that 218 would have to be at least 51% of the closeted gays in America. That means there are less than 450 closeted gays in a country of 307 million!
