Patient dies after EPA mandated device shuts down ambulance

• Not corporate greed.

  The EPA requires vehicle manufacturers to put measures in place to ensure that vehicles cannot run without DEF. Most manufacturers have approached this in a similar way. Before a truck's DEF tank runs empty the driver is given a series of alerts on their dashboard displays (much the same way as if they were running low on diesel). Generally speaking, when the DEF tank level drops below 10% an amber warning lamp will come on, at 5% this lamp starts flashing and below 2.5% a solid amber warning light is displayed.

  If the truck is allowed to run out of DEF completely, the engine's power is reduced. This generally follows the next intentional key-off, when vehicle speed will be limited to 5 mph and a solid red warning will be displayed.

• I was a member of the local Rural Fire Board and we needed a new cab/chassis for a brush/grass unit. The diesel that was available had the feature of lighting fuel in the muffler and sending flames out the exhaust to clean the exhaust system. Brilliant idea! Start more fires while trying to put out fires. Only in America.

• People are killed in car accidents everyday because their cars are small because of the EPA mandated fuel economy standards.

  • Then there's the people who can't afford electricity or heat because of high prices caused by EPA regulations. Might be interesting to calculate total deaths caused by the EPA's misguided efforts to save us.

• Ah, there's no there there. Why focus on this? At least he died green. AGW would have killed him anyway. And at this point what difference does it make?

• One can only hope that fat libturb Lisa Jackson has a medical emergency and the ambulance who comes to get here has an EPA mandated moment and she expires quietly in the back while waiting for another ambulance.

• On a related side note, a good number of my friends are professional truck drivers, and all their big rigs now have the EPA mandated crap in them. All it takes is a bad batch of fuel, and their trucks just shut down and it costs thousands to tow them to be fixed.

  • You might get a kick out of knowing I was placed in charge of buying vehicles for a Fish and Wildlife office (the basturds who administer the Endangered Species Act) and I purchased a big diesel Silverado that pooped out on the first long trip... way out in the middle of Nowhere, Nevada. All because of the little EPA dooflicky. I was the only one in the office who saw the poetic justice.

• Well, at least it was a suspect, and not a victim. On the one hand, good riddance. On the other, I guess his family will get rich from suing the EPA, DC, the ambulance company, the EMT's and everyone else. So they will be rich ghetto rats, instead of poor ones. At least for a while, till they blow all the money.
