Police: Parents of Michigan High School Shooter Are on the Run; UPDATE: Lawyers Dispute ‘Fugitive’ Status. Do his parents bear some responsibility? We think so. Involuntary manslaughter? Well could be, or it could be a stretch by a liberal DA. Time will tell.
The tragic Michigan high school shooting is not over. Ethan Crumbley, 15, shot and killed four students at Oxford High School this week. He’s facing murder and terrorism charges. He’s being charged as an adult. And his parents were just slapped with four counts of involuntary manslaughter. Jennifer and James Crumbley reportedly bought the firearm used in the shooting despite their son’s alarming behavior. They did not safeguard it. Now, the parents are on the run.
Update: They were caught last night in Detroit.

I have no idea what the law is and I'm not even interested in looking it up. It just seems to me that 15 is old enough where his parents shouldn't have to lock up their guns. Maybe I'm crazy. I mean, this is Michigan--we like to brag we have more guns per capita than Texas. Fifteen year olds are likely to have full access to guns in my experience. I grew up with a kid whose after-school chores included shooting rats out in the junkyard behind his house. We loved going there after school and "helping" him. It was fun. I remember blasting away with a handgun, with which I had absolutely no prayer of hitting a rat. But I shot the hell out of an old Studebaker carcass that was out there.
What I'm saying is I don't think the parents should be charged for a crime committed by their son.
The DA is charging him as an adult. How is it then that the same DA is attempting to charge the parents? It sounds to an experienced person this DA is throwing things at the wall in hopes of getting it to stick.
And people are pointing out that if the parents are somehow accountable, then the school is even more so. After all the school saw two days of weird behavior in class, enough to call the parents in for a conference on the fatal morning, but they never notified the police. Seems to me the school is more responsible than the parents... although I don't think the school deserves criminal charges either.
For some reason we as a society want to cast blame anywhere and everywhere when something bad happens, especially in the direction of parents, when actually, as in this case, there is clearly one person to blame, the kid who brought a gun to school and started shooting his fellow students.
I got my first gun in 1961. I have yet to shoot anyone with it.
Exactly.
