Likely so. There's roughly a billion dollars on the table in that deal if you believe the media. Not sure how much is his as there are several other investors. Follow the money. It usually explains why most people do the things they do.

Lefties fall into one of two categories -
one basically goes with the instructions of Sherman McCoy in Bonfire of the Vanities: "insulate" (from the riff-raff and the ugly side of society). So most of the higher-ups in the pecking order of the left (in descending order - academia, national level politicians, major media players, Hollywood, union leaders) view the policies they advocate as something for other people (this includes Karl Marx, IMO). They feel free to advocate this shit because they feel they will insulated themselves from the consequences, or they will be the leaders.
The second category is the lower levels of the pecking order (state/county/muni level politicians, the lesser and no-name Hollywood types, local party operatives, community organizer types, true-blue dem voters, occupy types). The majority of these aren't really in position to effectively insulate. Their driving force is their willingness to suffer the consequences as long as people they don't like are getting screwed.
There is some overlap between the two categories. It could be noted that most of the bottom of the bottom is operating totally on an animal-level stimulus response level. E.g, the demonstrating gays who support an ideology that dictates that they be thrown off a tall building are doing so for NO other reason that they perceive that someone they don't like opposes that ideology. There is zero thought beyond that one factor.
