Slippery Slope is absolutely the appropriate argument here. We are already seeing the effects in New York with bans on soda. We see it all across the country with the near-prohibition of tobacco. We see it in the liberal assault on tasty food.
Americans must remind the power brokers that government's job is not to babysit us. The primary function of government is national defense. Period.

First, 'assault rifles' are illegal in the U.S. - Only drug dealers have them.
Second, a "Glock" isn't a type of gun, you incredible nitwit!

First - I see tons of people crying about how 'assault weapons are more deadly and accurate.' False, a 5.56mm is the same as a .223 I would use on groundhogs. GROUNDHOGS. (For the purists, I know there is a slight difference between the two, and yes, you can get rifles chambered for one that fire both, but the other will have poor accuracy with one of the types.) A 7.62 x 39mm (standard Warsaw Pact AK/SKS round) is a WEAK version of a .308 I would use on whitetail deer. (And the .308 Winchester is a 7.62 x 51mm) What you need a class 3 permit for is: full auto, short barrel rifle or shotgun, and certain types of equipment, and then ONLY if you actually have it assembled, depending on the equipment. I have over 35 years of experience in and out of the U.S. with both civilian and military weapons, including two contracts in Afghanistan, and honestly, if this idiot really wanted to do maximum damage, he'd have left the AK at home, left the Glock at home, and carried two SHOTGUNS, both with buckshot, both with extended magazines (8 rounds). Still, it's interesting that the UN treaty is coming up this week, and we still know NOTHING about this kid, if he was political in any way, NOTHING other than what he was studying in college, and that he taught at a summer camp.

Questions for Rachel and anyone else advocating an ban on "assault" weapons:
What exactly is an assault weapon?
Would you expect a ban to work a) not as well, b) equally as well, or c) better than the ban on cocaine, heroin, marijuana, etc.?
If it's "c", on what basis would you expect it to work better?
Don't bother arguing anything else with these people. Don't bother bringing up statistics of crimes prevented, the failure of gun control in DC or other major cities, Switzerland, cliches (When you outlaw guns...), or anything else. None of that is really the issue with them, in spite of anything they say. Safety has nothing to do with it.
There is only one thing, and it's something that very few, if any, of them will ever admit openly:
They see hunters and basically anyone who has or wants a gun (other than criminals), as a sub-human, under-evolved troglodyte who basically, deep-down inside, is EVIL (how else to explain voting for Reagan, Bush, etc?), and they don't want YOU (and me), to have a gun. A gun = freedom, and they have a deep-seated, pathological hatred of freedom.
They know damn well that criminals and terrorists will still get them. They don't care. They simply don't want YOU to have them.

Saw a post the other day that had a link to FBI crime stats I can look for. The gist of it was that murder rates didn't go down after the "assault weapons" ban, and they didn't go up after they let it expire. But try explaining that to one of your former (thank goodness) leftist friends.

I find that many on the right are the same way. That was my point in the original post. Most of those lucky enough to be born rational tend to try to apply that same reasoning ability to the way the left (apparently) thinks. You will never succeed in understanding them that way.
There is no rational thought going on there. There is no "there's this, therefore we get that." It's all on the level of Pavlov's dogs.
We liked chaos. We liked it when disorder reigns. Because it's an "in your face" to people we didn't like. We thought that most of the people Stalin and Mao killed needed to be at the very least gotten out of the way. The only disagreement would have been with the exact execution (no pun intended), of the grand plan that with the grand plan itself. We'd have a bigger problem with a church-going white guy in the hills having a gun so he can bag a deer so his family can eat than we did with a bunch of terrorists like the weathermen or the black panthers having guns to shoot at cops or bankers.
That is not to say that there are not more able (crafty?) leftists and lesser ones (the ones you refer to as "the dumbest rocks in the forest"). But the complete disconnect from any sense of understanding of cause-and-effect is something that permeates all levels. That is an essential part of basic intelligence. Observing these characters is why I came up with the difference between intelligent and smart.
Intelligence is being able to observe without bias and draw conclusions that serve to enhance understanding the present and expectations for the future. Clinton (pick one) is very smart, but has zipedeedoodah in intelligence.
But their leadership does and that's what is troubling. I've been debating with lefties over on FB a bit tonight and some last night. These people are not thinking through what they are saying. For example, one nitwit said that the 2d Amendment should be repealed just like the 18th was. After I stopped laughing I reminded this genius that only a liberal would use prohibition's repeal as an argument for a prohibition of guns.
Point though is this twit and millions of others believe in the progressives' statist ideology and somehow still see government as

In practice, the only thing we still have left in the Bill of Rights is the thing about quartering soldiers. And that's only because the need to force us to do so has not yet come about. When it does, they'll shred that one too.

The 6th, in my copy, states "In all criminal prosecutions ..." Maybe mine is out of date? Has that been changed to "In criminal prosecutions other than drug war seizures ... [ending with] none of the preceding shall apply to the IRS"? I must have missed that one.
In the first amendment - did I miss the addition of "except in cases where it is necessary to implement fairness."? For decades, I have been asking how insider trading laws are not a violation of the 1st amendment. I have yet to hear an actual answer, good or bad.

In section 1 of the 14th amendment, does it say the 10th is hereby repealed? It doesn't say that in my copy. The federal courts must be using another edition.
You are speaking truth to power. I am astounded at how easily progressives (amateurs,
not the leadership) are so ready to sacrifice their liberty over emotional responses to certain events. How easily manipulated and therefore dangerous these people are. It is appalling.

Whenever I try to bring up Constitutionality, or lack thereof, on FB, I can hear the eyes rolling. "Oh you and your silly old Constitution. THAT'S why the politicians don't feel a need to respect it. They've got the people dumbed down to that level.
People just need to keep in mind that the American Revolution was based in governmental abuses. That's why the Constitution lested several Government limiting clauses. If the current government doesn't clean up there act, there are those in America who are not afraid to revolt again.
