Saudi wedding guests are shoo-ins for 2012 Darwin Awards. They started firing their guns into the air in celebration, which chopped an electric cable in half, which fell against a metal door, which electrocuted 23 people. These are the people we enrich by refusing to build the Keystone Pipeline.

  • I remember a time or two where wedding celebrators were mistaken for the enemy in Iraq and Afghanistan because pilots that happen to be overhead saw muzzle flashes and thought they were firing at them.

  • I think we should encourage these folks to do this all day and all night long...It appears this is their best skill set, and we should encourage them to keep working on what they do best.

      you'll note, Texan's gun control is their Brains.

      Generally speaking, Texans, and i mean real Texans, not the Johnny come lately types, know how to handle firearms safely.

      As for Kentucky, well, in Basic, our unit's best shooter was from Kentucky, he was the only one to gain expert first time out the box.

      • The M-16's they gave us to use for rifle qualification were so worn out, that you were lucky if you could shoot 2 rounds without them jamming. Accuracy was horrible! Then there was the issue of the .22 conversions, because they didn't want us burning the .223 ammo that they usually digest.
        Needless to say, nobody qualified as expert out of the 200 or so that were there when I was.
        BTW, outside of there, I would have qualified.

        • Yeah PJ, I have ALWAYS been of the opinion the M16 is a POS.
          A couple of grains of sand, and it will jam. Plus the .223 round is just too damn light
          Yeah, yeah' I know all about how it is designed to be a "tumbler round", But in my PERSONAL OPINION, an overgrown .22 is STILL a .22. Great for plinking, and small game, but if I HAVE to bet my life, I want something with stopping power.
          If I hit them in the arm, I want to blow a leg off.

          Granted, shot placement is paramount, but with today's "spray and pray" type of warfare, well I prefer something that wont jam and WILL stop them dead in their tracks...and I do mean DEAD!

          • That is a profound line about the arm/leg trade off. Other than that let me opine; the modernized and improved M4 type rifles are fine for general combat type application, even with the lesser projectile, at least, I view the trade off as pretty even. If you wanted the most bang and to have it in a handy package, you really could not best the BAR. But really, the only reason anyone says the recoil is 'manageable' is because you can stop shooting before too many rounds cycle. Even the venerable M14 was a serious rock n rolling mofo to hold down fully auto. Three rounds from shouldered and she was going up, unless you're some kinda gorilla.

            So the M16 was a sensitive, under investigated dream of the whiz kids going into the military industrial complex takeover racket in the late 50s early 60s. Not really. Stoner had a great design and the whiz heads made him downsize it from 7.62 to 5.56. The AR10 was very cool, but even it would have failed the jungle test at first. So the mcnamara crowd stole it, fair and square and paid the guy for redesigning it.

            i won't tel y'all how good i was at it. Suffice to say, I spoke for my fellow soldiers in a specific- training- exercise, that we could place rounds down-range in SPITE of the range-warden's stand down beyond 25 yards. (due to fog)
            I followed those orders, expressed our grievance with smoke-man, and then, adhering to orders, proceeded to outline the tire-target with precision control.

            this, and this alone, *although not my only abiltiy* convinces me that I don't need any weapon but the one in my brain-bucket.

            Jesus Rules. I trust in Him. He hath fashioned ME, and all y'all to a specific purpose. :D

          • Yeah, thank God for the invention of the 3 round burst option.
            A few friends of mine who were in the 'Nam said the main problem with the '16 in the 1st version was more of a propellent problem than anything else. Once the powder was "adjusted" the weapon was better, not great, just better.
            Most preferred the AK. Pick it up after 3 days in a mud-hole, and it would still fire.

            Over a long range, not real accurate, just real reliable. Jungle warfare is rarely long range war-fare anyway.

            Did not know about the over-educated idiots making him make the round lighter though, thanks for that info.

          • The AK was designed by a real Russian to be neglected and mistreated but still to throw lead downrange, which it does faithfully. A shoelace dipped in a petroleum liquidy thing and pulled thru the bore 1 or 2 times a year is about standard these days.

            The M16 ammo propellant was adversely affected by jungle conditions and did not burn clean enough. They also chromed the bore. The goofy forward assist looks more like an ejection seat plunger.

          • That's not to say I wouldn't want to have one. I would just have it converted to a better round, like maybe a .308 or a 30-06.
            Not full auto though, a .308 or 30-06 round on full auto would require a much stronger frame, and probably rip your arm off!

            Which is why the Mosin is my primary long ranged weapon.
            Basically, it's a .308...on steroids.
            It only holds 5 rounds, and is bolt operated, but if you hit what you aim at........

            Took a friend of mine to the range, let him fire it. As a lark, he shot at my ladies target, and we laughed when her target waved back and forth. When the range master cleared us to go down range and check the targets, we discovered that he hit the steel frame holding the target, it was 1/14 inched long and 1/4 inches thick. At 75 yards, it cut the metal in two.

            God do I miss firing my shootin' irons.

          • Wish I could PJ, but I am living in Germany right now. No sense in spending the money on something I can't use/enjoy at the moment.

            When I do get back to the states (at some undetermined point in the future) I am planning to pick up the sniper version. It was going for around $400 last I looked.

    • Well actually no, PD. Living in Kentucky as I do, I just hear about the meth labs and the occasional murders and the often thefts. Not too much about shooting into the air, ammo's way too expensive here for that kind of lavish hokum!

    • Hey hey hey, all of our rounds go downrange into targets or various assorted mammals. Well, sometimes our Latino brothers pop a few rounds on New Years.... but hey, most of those guys are just "visiting" and don't have dollars to use at the fireworks stand. ;)
