Frankly, I have a hard time believing they vacate Pennsylvania Avenue every time a tourist sets a bag down. If there's one thing we know about the Secret Service after the events of the past few months, it's that they're a bunch of spouse-cheating cowboys with barely a passing interest in protecting the president. It's more likely that they would be watching porn on White House computers than watching backpacks of middle-aged white tourists taking pictures.

What if there really was an explosive in a bag that went off and killed several protestors? I suspect a similar reaction from this website. Lets face it: this isn't about the issue anymore its about picking sides.

Then maybe increased sensitivity to tourists dropping bags might be appropriate. But such an incident has never happened, has it? Which brings up the question of why you are susceptible to the suggestion that it's a possibility, rather than the more likely scenario that certain occupants of the White House looked out their window, got irritated, and said, "Get those bums out of my sight!"
That is a strong possibility as well. Maybe this is an example of governmental abuse. However, the burden of proof lies upon you in order to support such an assertion.
Why would the burden of proof be on me? Are you really that ignorant of civil rights? The government made a move that deprived people of their civil rights. The government bears the burden of proof that this is SOP to ensure the safety of the president and public. Nobody disputes that the owner of the package set it down to take a picture and reclaimed it. Once she noticed the commotion and reclaimed it, you're telling me it's still SOP to clear the whole block? Ridiculous.

If they really percieved this situation as a threat then they were merely protecting people. Like I said if it really was serious and god forbid something were to happen then I would expect you to claim that the SS wanted those protestors to get hurt. No matter what you are so determine to attack the Obama administration that you are willing to create a situation that doesn't possibly exist.

That's why I keep a pessimistic outlook toward the new folks that come here to debate us. Too many times you see them come in trying to sound reasonable, and their true agenda eventually comes to the fore.
Then, there have been some that came in, guns blazing, and turned out to be reasonable, and we got along once we explained our point to them.

This isn't a court room, Bradbury. It's a website. People are offering their opinions and speculations.
1) This may have played out exactly as claimed.
2) It is possible that someone, *knowing* how the SS would react, intentionally left a backpack hoping to get the result she did.
3) It is possible, as J. P. stated, that someone within the White House put in the order to have the protestors removed and the SS used a convenient ploy - a backpack a tourist set aside - as their justification.
4) It's possible the SS agents were hot and cranky and went entirely overboard.
I'm sure there are several other scenarios as well. We can talk about these things and ponder them without the necessity of "burden of proof."

Well... heh. I wouldn't quite say I need to prepare a cot in Ms Jenn's Home for Wayward Trolls for him yet, though he skirted close to it with that crack about "picking sides." He's been polite in his posts, and for that, I do believe he deserves credit.
I think Bradbury is what I call a "shallow reader." He seems to accept things too easily because they sound reasonable to him. This is what liberal progressives count on. As long as they can make something sound good regardless of whether it has any genuine merit, they know they can pull people in. Hence the frighteningly uninformed voters in those videos you posted.
He also doesn't seem to think things entirely through. For instance, I didn't get into it on the other thread, but I could argue that serving one's church *is* serving one's country. We have many volunteers at our church who take care of everything from building maintenance to yard work to running the church website. Because of this, the church does not have to pay for these services and has more money (brought in through donations) to put toward things like delivering meals to home-bound seniors and supplying food for the soup kitchen. As projects such as these serve the community outside the church, this then, is doing things for fellow Americans in need. To me? That is absolutely serving the country, not just something to be dismissed as only serving the church.
You are so magnanimous, Miss Jenn. But I have to agree with you about Bradbury. I have to say, until very recently, I had a fantasy about secret Service agents (no - not THAT kind of fantasy!). I thought that they were special, and hand selected for their job because they were the best of the best - with high ethics and devotion. I think of the footage of Regan being shot, and how the agents threw themselves over Reagan, and THAT was my fantasy about the agents.
So, a few months ago, I would have been thinking in the same general direction as Brad does. That the agents were being super-careful and following precise protocol, in the interests of everyone's well-being and safety. (Although, I still would have suspected that some operative left the bag.)
Isn't it funny how quickly a reputation can be ruined? I will never again think of the Secret Service as supermen. Pretty sad, really.
I'm sure there are still some "take a bullet for the President" types in there. Highly skilled and motivated professionals. We're just seeing proof that it's not the whole Service.

The Reagan era SS agents were very patriotic and proud of protecting their charge.
The ones we have now are motivated by CIA type dirty tricks and Clinton era debauchery.

By the way, I heard that it was actually 50 protesters. It's strange that they got this type of attention, since the 10's of thousands of tea-partiers in some rallies got zip. Are the tides shifting, or are conservatives being set-up by the media somehow? Oh, I hate being so suspicious...
I know exactly what you are saying. I hate how I keep looking at things now and thinking, "But what's *really* going on here?" It was never my desire or intention to be quite so "fashionable".
I know! And I don't even say HALF the stuff I think, because I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist. I bet that's what they count on. That most people, even when confronted with blatant, point-blank cheating and sneakiness, will say "No! That CAN'T be what it seems? I must be misunderstanding... no one would actually DO stuff like that...." Sort of like the emperor's new clothes.
