Software glitch could strand Chevy Volt drivers

Software glitch could strand Chevy Volt drivers. But officer, I didn’t park in the middle of the freeway, my computer crashed!

  • Judging by the way my computer behaves at times, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the notion of software-controlled cars. I like the idea of mechanical linkages between my brake pedal and my brakes, for instance. Also between my steering wheel and my front wheels. I guess that makes me a dinosaur. Pretty soon the cars will be driving themselves and 12-year-old kids will be hacking the software and we'll all spend the first ten minutes of our day sitting in the garage waiting for "security updates" to download.

    • They need to bring back cars with contact breakers, back when a regular guy could do his own complete tune-up. Now with the mandatory event recorders (black boxes) you can't even do your own oil change.

    • I'm with ya JP. I stopped doing work on cars when you started having to plug them into a computer to find out what the problem is.

Ah, how I long for the days when you could work on a car with a few basic tools. Or at least long for a CAR you can work on with a few basic tools.

      • Actually the OBD stuff isn't bad if you have a fairly simple older vehicle. My 96 Land Rover is easy to work on. The OBD codes eliminate a lot of guessing if something goes whack.

On newer cars with more electronic shit than you can shake a stick at I agree.

        • I had an 08 Toyota land cruiser. I could SEE the oil filter, I just couldn't REACH the oil filter.

I am seriously thinking about trying to find an old Dodge dart swinger with the straight 6 if (when) I get back to the states. Or an old 70's pickup truck.

Hell, ANYTHING I can actually stand inside the wheel well and turn a wrench works for me.

          • I'm no kind of mechanic, but when I drove Dune Scooters for a summer job back in college I had to change belts and change oil and easy crap like that, and a skinny kid like me could literally get into the engine compartment. (Head first sometimes when somebody dropped something.) Now I open my car's hood and wonder how the hell they get all that crap in there.

  • Where are all the new Volts bought by the Obummer administration to send to foriegn embassys going to get checked out? It will cost a fortune to bring all 20 or 30 of them back to the states to get checked out.
