Speaking of poop… The U.S. Park Service is thinking of hiring dogs to drive off the nasty hordes of defecating Canada geese that foul the National Mall. This is either about hygiene and aesthetics, or about politicians in D.C. resenting the competition.

A couple of things...
I love watching Canada Geese, they are interesting, & they are better as parents then many people who seem to be having kids.
As a someone who golfs, I also understand that when you get large flocks of Canada Geese, it gets messy. They sh!t everywhere, & when they have youngsters, they are very aggressive in protecting them. They then become a nuisance, & then they must be dealt with. Same would go for them in parks.
They also will cause problems on the roads. They decide to cross the street, & don't give a damn about you in your car. Amazing attitude on these things.
My vote is because of the competition. At least the geese can't help it.
but, it's illegal for me to shoot a couple of these giant pigeons out of season without the proper licenses, and federal, and state stamps (which i would roast and eat) because they are a "migratory" game bird (even though they never leave my yard).
They are starting to be more open to shooting these pests, even referring to them as vermin in some cases.
Still have to use steel shot though.
The migratory bird laws are insane. The USA is going to be buried in goose shit if we don't start blasting away at these damn things 365 days a year. They're out of control.
So now they'll have dog shit all over the place instead of goose shit. Brilliant.
How dare they scare these birds from their natural environment while they migrate. Seriously, doesn't this go against their Gaia spiel?
Two groups of Canada geese populate Washington—migrating geese and nonmigrating (often called resident) geese. For a goose to migrate, it must be taught the flight path by its parents. Therefore, all following generations of nonmigratory Canada geese will also be nonmigratory, or resident geese, which will stay year-round in the vicinity where they were born.
Populations of resident Canada geese have dramatically increased over the past 25 years, particularly in urban areas where there are few predators, prohibitions on hunting, and a dependable year-round supply of food and water.
Canada geese are particularly attracted to mowed lawns around homes, golf courses, parks, and similar areas next to open water. Because geese and people often occupy these spaces at the same time of the year, conflicts arise. Many citizens enjoy the presence of geese, but others do not.

They also love harvested grain fields.... just in case you ever find yourself in one and happen to have a shotgun...
And the danged fools will have to purchase, feed, groom, maintain the health of, and house the dogs for million$.
Instead of just paying for 10-cent lead solution to the problem.

Legal Status
Canada geese are protected under federal and state law and a hunting license and open season are required to hunt them. Where lethal control of Canada geese is necessary outside of hunting seasons, it should be carried out only after the above nonlethal control techniques have proven unsuccessful and only under permits issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Currently, the only agency permitted for lethal removal is the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services.
