Staten Island Borough President: Don’t Give Money to the Red Cross: An organization that uses most of the money it takes in to support itself while the people suffer? Sounds like the government. Only in the case of the latter the contributions are not voluntary . . . well at least not for 53 percent of us.

Hey Andrea Michelle… Romney’s campaign-event-turned-charity-drive doesn’t look so stupid now, does it?
A well known fact that the Red Cross is top heavy and that it pays all of its bills before doing the charity work they claim to do. If you wish to help and want to make a donation to an organization that is not that way. Make it to the Salvation Army.
See above. I support the Salvation Army, but remember too, all you not CHristians, their ultimate goal is to convert those they assist to Christainity. The Red Cross has no such agenda, and provide more that JUST disaster relief. In some areas they are the only Blood Bank. They teach first aid and CPR classes. They provide prenatal and parenting classes to EVERYONE (not just to low income families) and food water and shelter to victims of house fires, disasters, and assistance to the military and their families. They are a 24 hr 365(6) days a year provider. And I have never heard them refuse to help anyone for any reason. That takes money.
that takes love.
Sleep much? Or is this an extended wake cycle? :)
i plead the latter.

Hmm, must be on now.
i think i broke YT
that or the feds are coming.
They have expenses, too. I mean really, if either organization didn't pay their expenses they wouldn't be in business to help anyone.
Either Ruben's having conniptions or the troll has called in a u.n. observer.
I don't know enough about this to have a solid opinion but you made me check one thing. Administrative Expenses were 4% last year. But that 4% came to $137,509,155 for FYE 06/2011.
Big operations have big expenses.
Oh no, I wasn't making a judgement one way or the other, just shocked by the scope. 4% sounds reasonable, but wow.

$137,509,155 for FYE 06/2011
one hundred thirty-seven million five hundred nine thousand one hundred fifty-five dollars.
times
no dollars and four-thousandths of one dollar.
is my math right?
I remember a story I heard as a teen from a family friend. His unit was pulled off the front line in Korea, just a few miles to the rear for some R&R. The Salvation Army was there handing out free coffee and doughnuts. The Red Cross was there SELLING coffee and doughnuts. Proud to say I give the SA, never, ever to the RC.
And as a multiple year Red Cross worker, the story of the Red Cross selling coffee and donuts while others were free is at least somewhat an urban myth. Yes, they charged. They were told they had to because other countries' relief organizations were selling and complained about the Red Cross giving it away. In general, Red Cross units run in the red (no pun intended) when they provide disaster services because people don't back them, but expect them there forthwith. Maybe if folks would quit dragging out this old chestnut of a story, the Red Cross would better funded to give the help they generously provide. And incidently, all those workers? There may be a couple of paid peopl, but most are VOLUNTEERS who left their jobs and families and use their own money to help where they are needed.
body blow body blow body blow uppercut it's a knock out!
:D
I think you have some wires crossed Al. I have never seen a multi-million dollar Red Cross float in the Rose Bowl Parade, the Salvation Army has one in the parade every few years.
I live near tornado country and have seen first hand the dedication of the Red Cross volunteers many times. They get my money because they don't waste it on floats for parades.

while this is about WWII I didn't find anything about charging in Korea. As a matter of fact, contemporary footage shows soldiers taking coffee and donuts without paying.
I received a plane ticket to see my Grandmother for the final time, in the hospital, from the Red Cross whilst I was in the Army. If you're going to denigrate the Red Cross, please provide more substantiation than hearsay evidence. thanks.
What a jerk off...They didn't get here fast enough so don't give them any money, It would be Ironic if this turd needed blood and the red cross refused...
I give BLOOD to the Red Cross.
At least THEY give a damn about a person's "lifestyle choice."
