Breaking News: Steve Jobs is dead. Love him or hate him the man was a giant in shaping the information age. And for what it is worth we say ‘hat’s off’ and hope he’s somewhere up there smiling down from that big iCloud in the sky.

"60 Minutes" on Sunday night had an interesting story on Steve Jobs. It largely featured an interview with author Walter Issacson who has written a new book about Jobs. The story featured some tapes of Job speaking. The story can be viewed on the "60 Minutes" website. During the story Job was quoted as saying he didn't want his money to make him strange the way he had seen wealth change other people. Jobs was said to be 50-50 on the existence of God but seemed to be opening more to more to belief after being diagnosed with cancer.

Sidekick, the sentence that jumps out at me from the article is the following one:"Once you figure out why your cell phone gets better and cheaper every year but your public schools get more expensive and less effective, you can apply that model to answer a great many questions about public policy." I don't blame companies big and small for spending some of their profits to fight Big Government overregulation. Obama's new regulations and proposed regulations are killing any chance for a decent recovery. Even some of his 2008 business supporters are now starting to publicly complain.
Theres an Ipad in my future, it'll be the first Apple product for me.
I remember when my father got his first "adding machine" at his accounting firm. The thing was huge and resembled a overgrown typewriter.
It wasn't even eclectically powered, it required manual labor to operate. You'd punch in the Numbers and then pull a large lever like a on a slot machine.
Jobs, Woz and Gates changed the world.
I've long been fascinated with Apple computers but have never owned one. I keep looking at the iMac but can't pull the trigger. Word processing is most important to me. Computer people keep telling me that if I'm going to use Word why not save hundreds of dollars and not get an Apple. I've asked the personnel in Apple stores about word processing on it but they haven't been very helpful. I've heard that Apple's Pages word processor is much better now though. You hate to see people die but Steve Jobs seems to have suffered for so long that you're kinda glad to see his suffering come to an end.

IMHO you're better off with the Windows Product (I Know some will disagree and that might be wrong to say on a post honoring the life of Jobs). My reasoning, though, is that you can get an equivalent machine for far less money and they are usually more suited for the day to day tasks one encounters when they're not making music or movies.
As for the word processor I've never used Pages (read good things about it though) but that might be a wash as you now have to pay a pretty penny to get the Microsoft Office Suite . . . it no longer comes with your purchase other than in trial form. I bought it (at a greatly reduced rate) and love it. But a very good free alternative is Sun Microsystems Open Office, which you can find and download for free by googling it.
My wife has a Mac Book Pro. She loves it. But she uses my laptop for all the important stuff that doesn't require a firewire connection . . .even if the Apple is far better to look at.
I've owned two iPhones and have an iPad. These are brilliant devices. And I think they represent what I like about Apple. They are guys that innovate. They bring amazing concepts and ideas to the market. Sure someone else might do it better later. Or provide a similar device that offers the user more freedom over their more powerful (and less expensive) product. But without Apple these products might never have existed. And had they existed it would have been in that cold Microsoft kinda way that would never have turned it into more than a business/techie accessory.
Kip, I use Open Office all the time. As you said, it is free, but it is 100% compatible with Microsoft Office. You can open any MS Word doc with Open Office, edit it print it, save it as a MS Word doc and send it to people that use Word. The spreadsheets work great as well.

I saw a photo of Steve a few weeks ago, he looked like death warmed over. Looked like the family took him for his last ride around to see the Bay Area. My step father had stomach cancer, looked the same when I took him for a last ride in his Ferrari. Shitty way to go, doesn't matter who you are or your status. I really feel bad for Steve Jobs, he's a year younger than I am and it's way too young to die. Say what you want about him, Steve was a great man, with great vision and put some great products in the public's hands. He didn't puss out at the end either, he kept on going until his body wouldn't let him. A great example. May God bless him.
I work with an Apple phanboy who has been in a tizzy for =weeks= about the new iphone. He's gonna be sitting shiva with this, I think.
What happens now is the great unknown since we will never know just how far into the future he could have taken us. Without him, we wouldn't be here today. Rest in peace Mr Jobs...
