Taxpayer mugging: Federal employees can get one day off for every 1.4 days worked

Taxpayer mugging: Federal employees can get one day off for every 1.4 days worked. The way this is going if you’re a Federal employee you may never have to work.

They already make an average 55% more in wages and compensation than private sector workers, get 10 paid holidays, and can be eligible for another 99 paid days off, so when Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson considered giving federal employees an additional free day for Juneteenth, he balked.

“I am happy to celebrate Juneteenth. I think we should celebrate the fact that we did remove that original sin by emancipating slaves,” said Johnson in blocking Senate approval Wednesday.

“I simply don’t believe we should make American taxpayers in the private sector pony up $600 million a year, $6 billion over 10 years, to give federal workers, who already are paid quite generously and have quite a few days off, one more paid day off,” he added.

  • Never been better to be a government employee. Since I work in healthcare, maybe it wouldnt be so bad if the government takes over healthcare...at least for me, anyway.

  • I'm afraid that at this point, I'd have to use my sick leave for my heart attack if I had to use any parental leave.

So, the whole thing is confusing: you only get the 8 hours/ppd after 15 years of federal service, and only receive 2 for the first three years and 6 hours from 3 to 15 years. So, it would take a full 160 hours of work to get 2 hours of paid time off for the first couple of years. In one month, a person could get 4 hours of annual leave, and 4 hours of sick leave, in order to take a day off, and then you'd really have to be sick, and not just taking a day off.

None of the people I know who get 8 hours a ppd have less than 200 hours banked; that's because they simply don't take the time off. Senior people get warned on this each year, that they need to take their leave. This year, because I can't take a vacation, I'm going to have to donate all my leave at the end of the year.

But the sick leave, you actually have to be sick for that, or else it counts as fraud. So it's a cushion, but not a way to take off for Miami for the week.

  • I work with federal civilians... this isn't exactly true. You have to have so many years (20) in the job before you can see max vacation days. The ones I work with always work their butts off. Hardly ever take time off. They usually have to sell their day back. Many work weekends and holidays because they work rotating 12 hour shifts.
