Texas welfare recipient says “Working is stupid.” “She says taxpayers are the fools…she gets to lay up all day and smoke weed while you go to work.” Well, Obama’s doin’ his part to rid the country of those foolish taxpayers….

Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

    He's pretty stupid to have fallen for it.

    Either that, or he made the whole thing up to bolster ratings.

          • I find it interesting that you are so sure this is a fake call. I have spoken with and overheard much the same in San Antonio, Whioch is aboout anhour South of Austin. I dont suppose in any universe you would admit that this is actualy true? That maybe the preponderance of posters whohave trien to explain to you that scammers like this one are in the system, and we begrude every dollar the take away from soneone who truly needs the assistance? Of course not, because that would make you undeniable WRONG! God almighty can't you admit to anything?

            I'll tell you why I think it's fake:

            1) There is NO reason that someone who depends on government assistance would phone in to a right wing radio show to flaunt her dependence before a bunch of anti-government-program listeners and a sharp tongued host.
            What would be the point? Most people on government assistance just want the help, as quickly and easily as possible with no hassles. Why would someone deliberately set herself up for hassles?

            2) Why would such a person be listening to such a radio station in the first place?

            3) The woman was not at all hesitant, and her diction was impeccable. Yeah, yeah, I realize that it's possible that someone who's "on the dole" by choice might have excellent diction, and have the presence of mind to defend her position glibly, without any hemming or hawing or angry defensiveness.....but it's unlikely.

            4) There are plenty of motives that someone might call into a radio show and fake such a situation. If it's the person herself doing the scamming, it would be an interesting joke to present an "I'm scamming the public and I'm proud of it" scenario, then listen to the heads explode. If it's the radio station itself that's doing it, having callers validate their listeners' favorite stereotypes would make for great ratings. And validating those stereotypes also fans the flames of anger and outrage, which (as any political manipulator can tell you) is a great tool to get people to fall into line.

            Put it all together, and, as the baby character said in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," the whole thing stinks like yesterday's diapers.

          • WOW. The level of denial is even worse than we all thought. This sounds perfectly in line with what SOME people on various types of assistance, I have cared for patients both in the hospital and in the community that confide in me they really are married, but the spouse in from Mexico and none of his income is trackable. She was on food stamps. paid about $50 a monthe for a 3 befroom,. 2 bath home, was getting assistance for her utility bills, reduced charges on her phone, Got free holiday meals each year, and received cashpayments on top of that. She had more discretionary income than I did working full time as an RN. I am NOT saying they are ALL scammers. I am say a significant minority are, and need to be weeded out, so people with real need can get the benefits.

          • I'm not sayng that a minority, significant or otherwise, don't cheat the system, Rose. What I'm saying is that those who receive assistance don't usually call up right wing radio stations to brag about it to a hostile audience. More typically, they'd want to keep quiet about it. Why risk having their voice be recognized, and turned in to the authorities as a scammer?

            You know, I'm aware that patients often confide in nurses, but I find it highly unlikely that you'd know that much about your patient's "discretionary income" and bill paying habits, unless you were snooping around in her private papers. Or, of course, you were doing a bit of embellishing, to make a better story.

            It's one of the reasons Romney was so totally floored when he lost the 2012 election----because he hadn't bothered to pay attention to what the opposition was saying.

            I remember watching a veritable shitton of polls.. There was a prediction contest here and I was the only one who predicted Obama victory.. I just copied smarter people's predictions. I thought you, or maybe drb, despaired over an Obama win as well, but didn't provide numbers (i just remember a female..).

            To my immortal shame, I fudged my popular vote prediction to prevent being buried, but I gave Obama the electoral (still got TDs). And I'm no expert. I was just reading a bunch of polls and I never found that UnskewedPolls guy's guesswork math credible

          • I wasn't as confident as some of my friends were that Obama was going to win. I was aware that Romney really wasn't very popular, but knew that the very well bankrolled "Anyone but Obama" campaign was resonating pretty well with Republicans.

            But I think it's a stretch to assume that the election was fraudulently won. Seems to me that a lot of the criticism of Obama has just been payback for criticism (deserved or otherwise) of Bush. As we all know, there was a lot of controversy over his appointment---pardon me, I mean election----in in 2000. So what could be more natural than to accuse Obama of being unlawfully elected 12 years later? Just as he's been accused of taking too much vacation, artificially raising gasoline prices and behaving like a buffoon in public places.

          • Mutiple voter fraud situations exposed after the election. Districts where 110% of the voters voted for Barry. The insane woman who voted 3 times herself, and voted FOR HER DAUGHTER once, then the daughter also voted. And Barry IS his name. It is a diminutive of Barak and was used by his MOTHER to enroll him in school.

          • But you're not his mother, Rose, nor is he of kindergarten age any more. He's made it very clear that he prefers to go by the name of Barack, not "Barry." What's more, it's customary in this country to refer to presidents by their surnames, not by cute diminutives of their first name that they didn't give you permission to use.

            Now that we've got that settled, got some DOCUMENTED statistics for your accusation that Obama didn't actually win the election? Not right wing "all them blacks cheat" screeds or unsubstantiated "a poll worker who asked to be anonymous said" accusations, but real statistics?

            It never occurred to you, either, that that woman was unusually self confident and unusually eloquent, with impeccable diction----not usually the case with a poor person who's never held a regular job. Anyone who wasn't sucked into it would have guessed that she's a professional actress or radio announcer, referring to (if not reading) a prepared script.

            But, hey, this woman convinced the show's listeners what they wanted to believe, so they swallowed it unquestioningly. And you fell right in line with the rest.

            The rest of your rant is just a bunch of stereotype stuff you've swallowed along the way, and not worth addressing.
