The chemistry joke that got high school student suspended

The chemistry joke that got a high school student suspended. Graduating senior Paris Gray’s yearbook quote was:

“When the going gets tough, just remember to Barium, Carbon, Potassium, Thorium, Astatine, Arsenic, Sulfur, Uranium, Phosphorus.”

After the yearbook was printed and distributed, school officials finally figured out the symbols for those chemicals spell BaCK ThAt AsS UP. Public sentiment is running solidly in her favor and school officials have revoked the punishment.

  • UPDATE: the school and the district did some MAJOR back-peddling on this issue as soon as it hit our local TV news. She embarrassed them not one, but twice ;-)

  • She should be applauded for being clever enough to come up with such a statement. I think she's a smart cookie and deserves recognition for showing just how stupid teachers are. They are supposed to catch stuff like this before it gets to the printer.

    • Having worked onthe yearbook for 2 years, the teachers are not likely B-) to catch anything this subtle. And the pages are set by students, so. . . .

        • At least I wasn't on the campus p as per. THAT is inspected closely by the sponsoring teacher. Usually one of the English teachers

          • You would think that the teacher/advisor on the yearbook committee would have shown that to a chemistry teacher to find out if there was anything wrong with it.

  • With a vocabulary like that she's earned the right to do anything she wants with her @$$ .

  • I'm really glad that they suspended her - good that it happened so soon in her young adulthood! It should teach her that there is NO room for independent thought or expression in a tyranny. The next time she needs to be cleaver she'll understand about watching her back, making sure she holds all the cards.

The school officials? A nice case of Lyme disease or dengue fever sounds appropriate.

  • She's not only clever, she actually knows some chemistry. If it were my school, I'd put her picture up in the front lobby instead of suspending her.

  • Why does Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 keep coming to mind?

  • First they came for the kids who shaped pop tarts into guns...
Then they came for the kids who couldn't eat Mooch's lunch meals...
Then came for the kids with a sense of humor.
