The Cop got lucky, if this suspect had REALLY wanted to commit suicide by cop, he would have brought a gun. Like a lot of people who threaten to commit suicide, they don't want to actually kill themselves,m they want attention.
This could have turned out badly for the cop, I have nothing wrong with retreating, I have done it to get behind cover, but if you go down, you are pretty much defenseless against an attacker.
The media is playing this for all it is worth, now watch this come up in trails for other Police Shootings. Creepy ass lawyers will say See...See, he didn't shoot, why did you?

Backing off if it makes sense is OK, but when you're being charged by a nut that might be armed, it makes no sense.
