Yep. The only difference is they now keep them in pubilc housing instead of on a plantation. Instead of being forced to work for their free housing, food, medical care and clothing slaves now get it all for doing nothing. Including an Obummer phone. Democrats haven't changed over the years, they just figured out it was easier to control the slaves if they quit forcing them to pick cotton.

Brooks wasn’t a senator, he was a representative (so he really had no business in the Senate chambers), but I agree with you. I know times were different, and I know congresscritters are protected from arrest by the Constitution, but still…
Seriously regardless of what office he held there has to be a way that if someone assaults someone else they go to prison. That is just elementary.
Not nit picking but flashing back on my days in the one room schoolhouse, thought I remembered the mean lady who was always hitting me with a hickory stick saying something about treason and felony. But what with just trying to stay alive during all the miles of walking to and fro in the snow I forgot a lot, could be wrong.

No. My elementary school was packed with a group of tough old ladies who all commuted from the same small rural town. The toughest was the last one: 6th grade teacher Mrs. Andre. One learned very quickly that one did not mess with Mrs. Andre. Nothing could fool her, and no excuse was acceptable. When I looked back as an adult I decided she was the best teacher I ever had.

So you're right and I was wrong. Your mean lady was better than my mean lady. The stay-out-of-jail card does work for parking tickets but not for felonies. Seems to me Brooks beating the crap out of a senator in the senate chambers would have been a felony and he could have been arrested. Maybe he skedaddled back to South Carolina afterward.

That is what I am thinking he probably left jurisdiction and with war looming it didnt make any sense to go after him or there was no FBI back then that would do that. Seriously that man should have been in prison for the rest of his damn life.

I believe the way it works is, if a congresscritter simply says the words, "I need to go to work," the police cannot detain him... as long as Congress is in session. Doesn't matter what the lowlife may have done. Nobody and nothing is allowed to prevent a sitting congresscritter from representing his constituents. They put that in the Constitution to prevent the Executive branch from trying to arrest the opposition before important votes. To arrest Brooks, the House would have had to first expel him, then the police could arrest him.
Fascinating shit, eh? You know where we see this legalism in action? When congresscritters pile up parking tickets knowing there's nothing the D.C. police can do about it while Congress is in session. I think one of the Kennedys had thousands of dollars of parking tickets he hadn't paid.
That is actually quite disgusting and the framers should have put exclusions in order to prevent abuse. Sometimes people dont seem to understand human nature.

Yeah, I remember when that bit of info came out. The gall of a Democrat claiming Cherokee heritage to advance her career when she is actually a descendant of someone who rounded up and relocated Cherokees - at the instigation of Democrats - is truly mind boggling.
