Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

I worked for the governemnt and I never joined a Union. It wasn't even offered. And there are still a great many states that are right to work states. Look around where some of the new jobs are developing. Toyota Plant in San Antonio ( think their first one was in Kentucky.) Other businesses in states that DON"T require Union membership. And before the libs go there, the pay and benefits at OUR plant are excellent. They were very dicriminating in who they hired, and now they are "family." When the Sunami in Japan slowed the availabilit of some parts and materials. they put people to work doing something else until the need built up again for full time factory work.
