As problems mount, the siren song of magical thinking becomes ever more irresistable to feckless politicians and the voters alike. The reasons why it usually fails. If it, like Marxism, always fails, why do we keep doing it? As Thomas Sowell once remarked, what works is less attractive than what “sounds good.” Besides, dude, it’s magical! What part of “magical” don’t you understand, bro?
