      I don't think you can make a case for treason here, in the legal sense.
      al Sabri was never actually put on trial - so legally it can't be said that he was responsible for anything - and was released into Saudi Arabian custody (not freed) in April 2016.
      The big mistake made here by the US military - and this occurred mostly under the Bush Administration - was in never having the military tribunals that would have established their guilt, and then carrying out the appropriate sentences (a bullet to the back of the head and a shallow, unmarked grave).
