Trump is correct, forest mismanagement contributed to California wildfire devastation. Short version. Democrats and Greentards: “Like wow man, we just had a bong hit and got a great idea man. Let’s just let the forests grow wild, like back to Mother Nature man.” IHTM: “Um, excuse us, but forest fires are part of Mother Nature dummy. Have another bong hit.” Of course their excuse is the usual suspect – global warming did it.

I was participating in a Ranger led discussion on the wildlife management act, while spending the night up in one of the Yosemite High Sierra camps. He said the #1 observation of European visitors to the NP system is that our forests look trashy. Apparently the EU countries actively remove undergrowth and dead brush, trees and other forest fire feeding fuels. Our management policy is to let it go native, for the most part. We might take a tip from the Euros on this issue.
That's a fancy way of saying exactly what Trump said.
One thing people need to keep in mind is that individual homeowners share the blame with the stupid California government. I watched a documentary that examined the way some houses in a wilderness-area subdivision will survive even when most of the others are destroyed. It was weird the way the camera would pan over a completely destroyed subdivision of leveled charred houses and then suddenly there would be one home that wasn't touched. The factor that allows a house to survive is active clearing by the homeowner around his home. If a homeowner does common sense clearing, instead of trying to live in some sort of mythical virgin forest co-existence, his house will probably survive. Fires can jump a long ways but after that jump they need something to burn. If you don't give them anything to burn after the jump, they'll go around your homestead.
Their forest management practice is just fine. So long as you don't build within the confines or within 150 miles of areas that are being managed. They always forget that part.
Then they compounded the problem by allowing several million people to live in the fire zones.
