Remember - whether they are terrorists or not right now is irrelevant. You can have a ton of people genuinely wanting to get out of Syria who intend no one any harm.
But what will likely happen is that they will come here, isolate themselves, and not assimilate.
(As an aside, because it is also irrelevant for this point as to why the above is what it is, the lack of assimilation will not be just because of their culture and/or religion. This country and especially its power and influence structure, i.e., gov't and academia, has been overrun with people who hate America and discourage assimilation every step of the way.)
Then, the next generation comes. They will not have experienced any of the reasons why they came to be here. There will be nothing to compare life in the US to. All they will know is that they live in some shithole, and the rest of America is a whole lot better off than they are. And their plight will be America's fault.
THAT will be the source of the terrorists.
Earlier today I read that in accepting the first wave of political refugees (they are not exactly immigrants) are being supplied with housing, money, and a job. So how is it we can't feed, clothe, employ our Veterans, but we can manage for Syrians?
I see this question raised in some form or another often. I don't have the answers. There are too many questions and variables. Most of the questions no one has even bothered to ask, and certainly no one has bothered to look into the variables.
Don't fall into the same trap the left has created - of seeing people only as groups. All veterans are not the same any more than all black or Latin people are the same. I happen to know (know of, since I no longer associate with these people) several veterans who signed up not out of any sense of patriotism, but for the bennies or to have someone live their life for them. The latter being simply that they were young leftists who saw an opportunity to have everything provided for them at a time when they did not want to confront real life. The last I heard, they were still America-hating leftists.
Which leads to Q's re the homeless veterans. The first and most obvious, at least to me when I was in SF a decade and a half ago - just because some homeless guy has a sign saying he's a Vietnam vet, must I automatically believe him? Is this like the left wants us to feel about a woman's accusations of sexism or harassment?
I have no idea what the numbers may be, but this is a scenario I can envision - a person who is simply not a responsible person, shirking it every step of the way, who finally gets to the end of the line with leeching off his parents, goes to another place where he will be taken care of and his life will be planned out by someone else - the military. Again, the basic motivation had nothing to do with any sense of duty or patriotism. When he gets out after one stint (since life in the military has all sorts of things that go along with the 3 squares and the roof over your head), he is still just as irresponsible as he was before. So now that he is wandering the street homeless, is it somehow America's fault? He was destined for homelessness anyway.
Another Q is - just because a person chose to serve in the military, does that mean he/she is now a permanent welfare case, that the gov't is supposed to provide them with money, housing, a job, etc? We know that when you give away free stuff, people will seemingly come out of the woodwork to get it. It's human nature. It's too easy, the moment things get a little tough, and freebies are there to be had, to just opt to go get them. And we also know full well that the gov't is a most willing enabler.
This is not a justification for taking in Syrian refugees. If it was up to me, we'd have a total moratorium on all immigration from Arab countries at the least, and probably all Islamic countries. until someone comes up with a way of determining who will become an American and guarantee it with their job on the line.
I understand what you are saying, and I know many veterans choose to remain homeless. But most of them have mental issues, severe PTSD, drug addiiction, alcoholism, which developed in response to their service. We can do better for them. Per haps Poppa has some statistics on Veteran problems, especially from my (Viet Nam) generation.

Right. Which goes right to my point of veterans being like everyone else - a group of distinct individuals who happen to have something in common in their life experiences.
Most are probably doing fine, or fine enough, making a living as productive members of society, and dealing with any issues caused by war or other military-specific stuff with some degree of success. Most of these people have no desire to live off the labor of others regardless of how much of it is available.
And others have serious drug, alcohol, PTSD etc. issues. But all those cases are different. The problem is that gov't for the most part are a group of people who do not really want to do anything of value. From what I've observed, they apparently try to make the most money while doing the least possible amount of actual work (public service). Treating people as individuals is hard. You have to actually think, every time. You'd have to have different programs for many different situations. It's too much work. It's much easier to lump everyone into one group, think of some one-size-fits-all solution, and tell everyone "see, we're doing something about it".
I could almost take the position, based on the level of "service" the VA provides, that the proper reward for having served your country is that the gov't will leave you the hell alone. It may very well be better than doing something for (to) them, as is the present case.
I am just saying that everyone claims there is no money for veterans, or for that matter, housing, healthcare, education, blah blah blah. But we can manage to come up with millions for Syrian refugees,even if they hate us.
There are two ways of looking at "The System" - one, most everything needs to be trashed and reconstructed. Both sides of the spectrum see that - we on the right say reconstruct in strict accordance with the Constitution, and of course on the left, with the Communist Manifesto, or Audacity of Hope, or some such.
The other is what can we do that can realistically be done within the system as it exists. One change that is waaay down my list is the few sheckels that the royal highnasses in DC occasionally throw at some people. And most certainly we can save a few hundred billion that are pissed away or pocketed for no or minimal exchange, and toss some at the veterans. Since returning to a strict interpretation of the Constitution is not something that will happen next week, I am not averse to tossing some cash to the vets. As long as it's not more gov't officials that are managing the programs.
The first item re the vets is to abolish the VA and put the new organization under the control of the Pentagon. Obviously this would not stop the "commander-in-chief" from screwing things up like he's doing now but it would put people in charge that have a modicum of understanding what these veterans are experiencing.
Okay, I stand corrected - The Pentagon would be the one exception, the one "gov't" entity that would be a significant improvement.
I still prefer shutting down the present system, and giving veterans a quality insurance plan that they can take to the doctor or hospital of their choice. I believe Trump even expressed this opinion recently.

Given the stakes, it should be more like: "...until someone comes up with a way of determining who will become an American and guarantee it with theirs, their children's and their grandchildren's lives on the line." After all, they are placing my family and all my descendants in terrible danger by allowing members of a toxic ideology in. As we see the end-result of the ethnic cleansing in Arab countries, where a formerly entirely Christian country has been transformed by brutality and intolerance into a Muslim country, I become much more adamant that any encroachment should not be allowed in any country that purports to allow freedom of religion and freedom of conscience.

Totally get your point. That is ultimately the whole point, and the only point that matters. The problem is that we are dealing with people (meaning the refugee/immigrant welcomers), who have a difficult time connecting what they do today with what will be the result tomorrow (literally, tomorrow), forget generations down the time line.

I was referring to what is essentially immunity on the part of many gov't people from their policies. This immunity ranges from senators and rep's who foist their social engineering and experimentation on us while keeping a different set of rules for themselves on to psychiatrists and psychologists who decide that an inmate is fit to return to society, an inmate who then continues his criminal activity (at best - often said inmate ups his criminal activity from robbery to assault to murder).
