• Eliminate athletic scholarships altogether and get rid of HS sports while you're at it. They're too much of a business and a waste of taxpayer funds in many cases. School at all levels should be about LEARNING.

  I'm not denying that schools make money off of these kids through merchandise sales, that it should be disallowed and I think the NCAA is a scumbag organization but these kids are compensated for their contributions, although I believe that they should return to guaranteed four year scholarships to protect themselves in the event of an injury, etc.

  I mean I'm sorry, nobody forces these kids to accept a scholarship and go to college and far too many see it as a stepping stone to "The Show", don't take their education seriously and many, even after making hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars end up with nothing to show for it.

  There are millions of kids that would love to go to college but can't afford to. Many of the ones that can go have to resort to student loans, burdening themselves with debt that lasts for years.

• Sorry. This is a LIE. There is not a sports jock ANYWHERE that can't afford to eat. The have EVERYTHING provided. One of my kids attended a residential 2 year school and THEY had Chinese athletes tennis scholarship. Community college. These ungrateful little wretches need to quit going to college and go through a farm team arrangement like in baseball. Leave the college's out of it

• Everyone is making money off these kids and the kids are not getting a thing for it. Don't try telling me they are getting an education for free. They are unable to hold a job during the season and have no money at all. Yet the students on academic scholarships can hold jobs, work as tutors and use their talents to make money.

  Most of the parents are just getting by. Yet the fat cats in Indy are making a fortune off these players. The universities and conferences are rolling in the cash while their so called student athletes are being exploited. How many of you know that they so called scholarships are four one year scholarships that can be revoked at the end of the year. The power brokers are today's new slave owners. In many cases these kids are exploited and then they are thrown away. Most don't get their degree, don't make to the professional level and are left with no future.

  • Gotta disagree with you here, Deepthnker. My daughter was an academic major-Music education. She had regular classes all morning, private lessons (required) in the afternoon, and was required EVERY SEMESTER to take an ensemble class (band, orchestra, choir, etc.) Those in Marching band had practice in the afternoon and early evening, with performances and exhiitions on weekends. On top of everything, her classes were only given 1-2 hours credit even though stuff like band took up nearly as much as a full time job. By dark, when the practices were over, the small town where the school is locatied had pretty much rolled up it sidewalks. And of course, she still had course work and instrumental practice to work on. Now you tell ME where she was supposed to work? And in her senior year, she would have had to buy a car, since there were not enough local schools for student teaching, and she had to be able to travel to other towns. Her costs included music, various equipment for classes (percussion requires multiple sticks, mallets, etc for instance) money for band shoes, uniform rental , a "formal" black dress for symphonic performances and on and on and on. Football skanks have all their s*it paid for or provided by the school.

    • Oh, and I forgot. If you are in band, your fall semester starts in late July/early August, to prepare a halftime show. 4-6 hour daily rehearsals. And in Texas, that means 103 degree heat. Football practices outside early, then goes in for weights, etc when it gets hot.

    • Damn what a rip off. From what you have said the only way would have been to have done with out sleep.

      This is part of the exploitation of students as well.

      • Pretty much. My daughter m made friends with TT h a staff member in food service, who used to save left overs from the luckily kicks meetings and give them to her and her roommate. I'm not sure how she would have eaten otherwise.

    • As I said above, you must participate in the "chosen" activities if you want your stuff paid for. Everyone else is on their own.

  • The problem is, they don't work at their education. They are looking for a free ride to the NBA, and know the best way to get there is to play college ball. They all think they will get drafted, so they don't give a crap about their education. I don't feel the least bit sorry for them.

    • That is true. It's upon the coaches, administration and others to encourage these players to get their degrees. Even if they are lucky enough to make it to a professional sport, their careers are going to come to an end one day and they better have a plan b.

• I think the athletes should unionize. The thugs at the NCAA get rich selling tickets and rights to the tournaments and bowl games and the kids playing sports get whacked if they sell a jersey with their autograph.

  • There should be a better way then to unionize the athletes to reform the system. The golden goose will be killed, & everybody will lose. The NCAA is at the root of the problem, as well as the broadcast networks & shoe companies. That is a messy combo, & they will only leave the table if they are dragged away kicking & screaming.

• I just love watching another entitlement minded so called "Student" Athlete going for the rags to riches pity party. I wonder how many truly intelligent students got rejected so this clown could play basketball.

  • More than you would believe and certainly more than should. I particulaly object to non-American students being given full ride athletic scholarships when the admissions policy for the rest of the students claim they don't have room for everyone.

      • One would think, but no. College sports used to essenteally be PE classes. Healthy mind, healthy bodies you know. now its a business completely unrelated to actually learning anything

• Paid on his behalf: $45,000/year, which includes room and board(FOOD) and all of his tuition costs. This is rubbish-these kids get a stipend in cash from the alumni-all of them have new cars-and they get free shoes from Nike, etc.
  This is nothing more than "Gettin mine" while the gettin is good! My heart pumps piss for him and others! I paid for my college. All with work-what do these kids do on summer break? They party their asses off.
  This kid needs money for blow, weed, and bitches period.
