  • It is one thing to be respectful of people's cultures, by not going over there and IMPOSING their way on the locals OR loudly mock or berate the locals over their practices. It is another thing altogether that people are expected to practice no matter how minimally the local culture ESPECIALLY if it is a visiting person and not at all interested in living there (and even THEN it is wrong).

    If I go there and I am hungry and it is Ramadan I will eat. Okay so there are no open places outside my hotel but if I am staying in a Hilton... the Hilton seriously won't have an open restaurant during Ramadan even though I am not a Muslim?! You EXPECT foreign money and tourism YET you demand that the tourist practice (however minimally) YOUR cultural dispositions and be inconvenience thereof?! How is that freedom? and why the hell would I go there and spend my money and time there?

    I don't care that these are military, they are still people and still have rights. If they have a day off and are out of base and it is day and it is Ramadan and they are hungry and they aren't Muslim they should be able to eat, there SHOULD BE places that cater to foreigners and Muslims should be able to just DEAL with the fact that the are people who aren't Muslims coming into their country, spending time and money there and don't have to follow their religious proclivities...

    Muslims can be fined put in prison or some other horrible event for not (doing some made up Christmas rituals that I don't have time to figure out right now because Christians do not enforce any special Christmas rituals not even for Christians generally speaking)

    In public, out of base, during the 12 days of Christmas...

    That would be INSANE... just INSANE come on!

    Questions:

    How is it okay to essentially force military who want a day off base to follow the religious ritual of fasting which is the main ritual of Ramadan?

    How would Muslims like it if they were forced to do ANYTHING of another person's religion when they are in another country?

    Why EXACTLY would Muslims be in any way offended because SOMEONE ELSE THAT IS NOT A MUSLIM is eating in front of them? Are their religion that weak, are they that weak?

    I mean is a real atheist really upset when they see a Catholic or an Episcopalian or someone else with an ashed cross on their forehead during Ash Wednesday? Should a Christian of a denomination that doesn't do that ritual go ape sh*t crazy when they see someone with the ashed cross or viceversa... ? Someone witht the ashed cross going whacko because others INCLUDING non-Christians NOT wearing the ashed cross...? How insane is this... come on!

      There are-- as I say, look at the actual Stars & Stripes story. However, most restaurants etc. are closed. I hope you are not suggesting that they be required to stay open for the sake of accommodating non-Mohammedans! That gets into the same issue we have right here, forcing bakeries to cater to gay weddings who object to it. As for the rest, as I said to poppa, we expect others to adhere to our own local norms when visiting, even if it is something as simple as wearing appropriate clothing in public.

      • So what you are saying is that: They want tourists/visitors/non Muslims to NOT feel welcomed in their country and I have to just deal with it? Well the solution is TO NOT GO. Get the hell out of Muslimlands if they are going to do this. Let them keep their laws. However, if they come HERE they DEMAND that places and situations and food are based on THEIR religious needs even at additional expense of others... how is that fair?

        I don't see this as exactly the same as that. The gays are free to use another bakery, whereas I wouldn't be free to eat at all. Not the same issue.

          • Especially now. It used to be safe to travel there IF you had male relatives with you (I am speaking from the female perspective). However, I am sure that is no longer the case.

There are still tourist types traveling in these countries unmolested, but until there is a problem, noone seems to grasp that legal right enjoyed in America vanish in other countries. You can be jailed, beaten, harrassed, tried for whatever strikes someone's fancy. Lawyer? HAH! And it isn't j it st Muslim countries. Look at that chick accused of mudering her roommate. Italy did a piss poor job of investigating, she was held forever with no bail, the after she was found guilty they vacated that decision, l e tbher go home, then . announced they were going to try her again! And this is a Europe's country, ostensibly operating under the rulevof law! Imagine what could happen in a Sharia run country.

        Do American businesses that cater to tourists stay open on our holidays?
        Restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, etc are open on Christmas, 4th of July, and other religious or National holidays, in order to service those who don't observe those holidays. If I went to visit a country that everything closed down on certain days, I would never go back. If I'm staying in a hotel like the Hilton, and don't have cooking facilities in my room, you better damned well have the hotel restaurant open if the other local places are closed!

      • They aren't staying at the Hilton. They likely aren't even living off base. And these recommendations only apply off base. I remember having areas of San Antonio off limits to military personnel because they were areas that were considered inappropriate or even risky. Some of it is respect. I grew up Baptist, and never HAD to cover my head in church. When I visited with Roman Catholic friends, however, I did, because they did. It that when in Rome thing.

        • You should be free to NOT cover your head if you don't feel like it without it being misconstrued as an offense to your friends who should truly be tolerant of you. If you want to emulate them OUT OF YOUR OWN FREE WILL that is one thing, if you are being TOLD AND ORDERED to emulate them especially when you would rather be you that is a completely different situation. The only solution is to stay on base even when you have a day off... during the entire month... if you feel like being you, whereas if they came here and we tried that sh*t with them, we will get our heads chopped off or at the very least CAIR b*tching and moaning (which they would have the right to, because I think that is just crazy).

  • Hang on troops, and let's look at this a different way. Don't we bitch about foreigners coming here and not knowing the least little bit about American/Western customs? Or thinking they deserve some special treatment because they are foreigners? Have we really reverted to the "ugly American" stereotype, thinking WE are above local law when abroad? You really think it's a BAD thing that Americans stationed in Bahrain get taught about the local culture and how to respect it?

    The most relevant part states: "Americans can be fined or detained by local authorities for eating, drinking or smoking in public when off-base during daylight hours."

    1) In public.
    2) Off-base, in other words, in a foreign country.
    3) In the daytime.

    Not terribly burdensome conditions. In fact, you could get arrested in New York City for smoking in public and drinking a Big Gulp day OR night.

    For one thing, it NOWHERE states that "soldiers are instructed to say "Ramadan Kareem.".

    Regarding another, "Hassan encouraged personnel to experience Iftar in a Ramadan tent, many of which are set up at various locations around Bahrain during the holy month and welcome non-Muslims.

    “Make it a point to visit these tents while you’re here. You don’t know if you’ll ever come back to Bahrain in the future,” Hassan said during the brief.

    I mean really. Come on. It's a dinner invitation. Relax.

    • At thecrisk of getting beat up (orcat least thumbed down) I don't really see this as a problem. In fact, I suspect the higher ups are trying to stave off problems. These rules only apply off base, and t5 hey are in, hello Bahrain. Better to lay low and stay under the radar, rather than be seen as intentionally trying to insult the local religion and traditions.

    • PD, it's a little different when someone goes to another country with the intent of becoming a permanent resident, then you should assimilate, I don't expect anyone coming here on vacation to become Americanized.
      This has become ridiculous when:

      Navy officials are requiring U.S. personnel to dress more conservatively off-base during Ramadan. Although not a requirement by Bahraini authorities, the Navy is demanding that men wear long-sleeved shirts and women wear sleeved blouses that cover their elbows. Also, men must wear long trousers, and women should wear pants or skirts that cover the knees.

      Our military officials have become total pussies! They are going so far out of their way to appease people that don't even require this behavior themselves!

        No, but we do expect people even visiting here to at least nominally conform to our norms. For example, suppose some African women visited a beach and commenced disrobing and swimming in the altogether (a wonderful old euphemism!). Wouldn't we want to carefully explain to them that at most American beaches, people wear swim suits, which for women includes tops that cover the bosoms?

        I repeat -- there is nothing here which mandates Americans adopt local customs on-base. Once off-base, you are a guest in a foreign country, and I see nothing wrong in conforming to and respecting local norms, whether in Bahrain or Iceland. And I would think this especially important when considering that this is a part of the world where we need allies and not more people determined to kill us.

      • BTW, as an aside, when I was in the Air Force, going through my tech training, we had Egyptian Air Force officers in our class. They conducted themselves as they would in Egypt, observing their customs. They were not obliged to observe our customs beyond the military custom of saluting. They weren't subjected to Christian or Jewish rituals or observations.

        • Exactly. Even something "not as bad" as fasting during a Christian or Jewish holy time.

        • Yep....I went through lots of different army schools with foreign officers and aside from traditional military courtesy it was a to each his own attitude.

          Funny aside: went on a 25 mile forced march with several foreign officers including one fat Jordanian major. About 10 miles in he stopped, grabbed hold of a tree, and announced, "I go no further!" He spent the rest of the hike sitting cross-legged with a stupid smile on his face in a trailer towed by a jeep. I realize the sample size of one is small but I've never thought much of the Jordanian military since as one would presume that a foreign army would only care to send their best and brightest to another country's military schools.

          Comparatively, the South Korean and Taiwanese officers were strict bad asses. Really impressive men.

          • The Egyptian officers weren't exactly svelte, but not obese either. They were however, very smart, and very nice and friendly.

          • One officer was a ROK naval officer who was a SEAL equivalent. Spoke poor English so he was hard to understand but he was an absolute physical stud. Very nice guy who never ever got rattled.

          • The Egyptians spoke English pretty well, but the accent made understanding them a bit difficult, after a while we got used to them.

  • You got to understand... they must submit even though they aren't Muslims or they will get their heads chopped off... That is the principle of the religion of pieces: Submit or we take a piece off your body, usually a piece that you will miss or else you won't because you are dead.

    • The remedy for that is NATO 5.56 mm rounds at full auto. Every military person in a potential combat zone should have one of the delivery systems for that round.

  • Meanwhile Easter and Christmas celebrations will not be allowed since the cave men don't believe in it. So now we are having our citizens being forced to submit to the whims of a cult? Maybe next we can have them celebrate moonie holidays, or forced to have tupperware parties....

  • To ensure equality of cultures, I submit that our service men and women invite the muslims to participate in our cultures as demonstrated by Gen. Blackjack Pershing (American service member was killed, he gathered up a bunch of local muslims, shot them, placed them in a mass grave and covered them with pig blood, for the remainder of the time there, no more Americans killed) that is culture of that area of the world I can live with) participate in their cult crap, don't think so! I am sorry for the young men and women who have to serve under the community organizer emperor!
